New place to try is Caravelle. It is part of the Wydham but open to the public (on the west side of the resort on the beach). The food was very very good. A little pricey, but less the bliss and the service UNBELIEVABLE. It was the best service i have seen here. Give it a try.

Papi's, was closed so we went to the restaurant nearby where they display the live crayfish in the tank at the front... ...The food was very, very good when it arrived - the Surf and Turf consisted of excellent fillet steak, chunk of fresh tuna, 4 small crayfish and 6 huge prawns served with warm, fresh crusty bread and adequate fresh vegetables and salad garnish. Would love to recommend it to everyone but you all know what happens when you do that.... :)

Cabarete Restaurant Review, Cassa del Pescador

I've tried to honestly review most of the restaurants on the beach front. Miro (Thai) is probably my favorite 'proper' restaurant, Del Pescador is excellent. La Calamar en Folie is another decent restaurant. Also, I'd like to know how Voy Voy is doing at night? It looked like the potential was there for something special.

Glad you agree with my view regarding the surf & turf!

I agree there's a lot of mediocre food.. but its much better than Santiago!

Try the chocolate mousse at the french owned sushi restaurant on the beach (i forget the name). It is world class!

If you like sushi, the best place in Caberete is in Ocean Dream Plazza. Can't remember the name, but it is on the end. If you are going to Sussa.

I guess a lot of the beach front places in Cabarete are pretty much pizza/burger/sandwich type restaurants ...but isn't that how the atmosphere is supposed to be over there?

For something a little fancier -I have had good dinners at both Casanova and Pescador .... good appitizers and seafood.

unfortunately for those who live in the area, I think the restaurants on the beach are always going to cater to the relaxed-beach atmosphere that the touists come for ...

some beach restaurants would do better if they stuck to burgers and pizza- they try to be trendy with some really horrible glutanous
sauces

accept what you are all saying - its either stuff to cater for the tourists or something fancy for the ex-pat population - can anyone recommend a really good Domicincan restaurant that perhaps we would not normally stop and try?

I want to know why the Dominicans don't grow vegetable and have more agriculture in such a rich place. there is no food to eat because no one is growing it.

Really good? Not sure... typical... there's Sandro's which is good, but basic fare. Chivo, chicken, & lambi are good. Never tried shrimp, fish, or beef there.

Same goes for a little place (Maria's?) which is roadside on the Sabaneta side of Camino del Sol... southside of the road. It has maybe 6 tables. It's directly across the road from a 'horse ranch', look for the white cement sign with red writing (and i think an image of a horse). Prices are cheap.

There's also Restaurante Tipico Mercedes, in Callejon de la Loma that I've heard is good. Haven't been there, though, so no first hand report.

If you're in Cabarete during lunch, I would suggest Kika's. It is on the main road, about 100 meters east (toward Sabaneta) of the police station. Very traditional Dominican and reasonable prices. Mary and I have been eating lunch there for years.

Tom, I have to second your recommendation.
I was just asking a friend about the restaurant and he said "you have eaten their food!". Apparently the food he sent out for a couple of weeks ago was from there. Good and plentiful :)

In Callejon de la Loma (on the left about a half mile in) there's a great place called El Tigre...the food is awesome and the price is very reasonable.

On the beach, as mentioned earlier, Celina's is the only real Dominican spot. The actual house of the owner...with a couple of tables right on the sand, a little pricier than the other Dominican spots, but the food is very good and the location can't be beat.
