The Ministry of Public Health announced the number of confirmed cases has climbed from 34 on 18 March to 72 cases as of the morning of 20 March 2020. There are 301 persons under observation. There are 78 persons in self-isolation, and another 49 are hospitalized.
Public Health Minister Rafael Sánchez Cárdenas explained the jump is primarily because people are now being tested at private labs. She says the cases are mostly of middle class, upper middle class and wealthy people. The explanation is that these are who travel and have access to foreigners who have brought the illness.
He says the sons of Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas and the director of the Port Authority Victor Gomez Casanova have tested negative.
