NYPD cracks down on gang hacked cars for export to the DR

After more than two years on the case, the New York Police were able to dismantle a sophisticated car theft operation in the New York area, including Washington Heights. The operation cloned car keys and disabled the original keys. That way they were able to gain entry to the vehicles and change the vehicle’s programming.

Members of this organization then transported the vehicles to one of several lots located in the Bronx, where these were altered and the vehicle identification numbers (VINs) were changed to give the stolen cars a new identity.

The Police says the gang was so good at it that the hacking too but five minutes. The network also replaced license plates with fake paper copies before selling them through websites and Facebook, even exporting the vehicles to the Dominican Republic.

The whole car selling business here needs an overall.
A loss of a dealers license for setting back an odometer.
A loss of license for altering VINs or titles.
Cars sold be dealers should have a least 50% brake life and 50% tread life remaining.
Any known issues affecting the car like leaking radiator or something affecting immediate longevity of the car should be disclosed (if not properly fixed).

But there are so many people who are selling cars here that don't have the paperwork. They are selling it for the Brother-in-Law or Uncle Tito who left for the Bronx. And they always know a good lawyer who can process the paperwork.
Some dealers aren't much better, some won't let you connect an OBII reader to look for codes.
