I got this on my second trip to DR, in 2003 I guess.
Went to the doctor at home who sent me to a dermatologist at the hospital.
He didn't know what it was and prescribed Prednison cream.
Didn't help.
Back to hospital. They did a biopsy. Still didn't find what it was and got more potent Prednison cream.
Didn't help.
Then after over half a year I read about scabies online and saw some photos.
Looked exactly like what I had.
I ordered a lotion called Eurax online and covered myself head to toe and washed all bed linnens and used clothes at high temp.
It then disappeared.
I lost some confidence in our health providers here.
Neither the doctor, dermatologist or hospital could figure out what is was, even though I had told them I'd been to DR.
What an experience! And I have
Read that it is endemic here in the DR!

Ironically, it is now starting to become endemic here in the Netherlands, especially among immigrants and in student housing.
So I guess if I got it now, they might recognise it!

You suffered a year with scabies? This is unreal.
Please tell me you didn't go the the "Dermatologist/Tire Repair and Hair Care Center Hospital" ?
Any 1st year demonology student should be able to diagnose scabies from a simple skin scrape
Most can spot it from just a glance

It was at least 7 months.
And like I said, I first saw a general practitioner and then a dermatologist at the hospital.
I still have a little scar from the biopsy they took and even that did not alert them it was scabies.
This was in 2003/2004 and scabies basically did not exist anymore here in the Netherlands.
Still, me telling them I had been to DR did not alert them either.
In the end I just started searching the web with my symptoms and including DR in the search terms and I found out myself what is was and also treated myself.
Luckily I never caught it again....also never returned to that hotel, since I'm pretty sure it was their towels or bed linnens who gave it to me.

Next time look for the burrows the scabies mites make in soft skin.
Look at the picture of burrowing mites. Maybe send it to the doctor in the Netherland's hospital who failed to diagnose it.
I had it one time myself but I knew what it was immediatley and since I could not get Ivermectin I ordered Permethrin from Amazon

LOL, I don't think that doctor is still working there or working at all over 20 years later.
Myself I had never heard of scabies, it just did not exist here back then.
But now it is back and especially in immigrant and student housing it is even rampant.
My guess is now they would diagnose it immediately...

Just to give an update…. At the urging of some friends I added invermectin to the regimen the dermatologist ordered. I had my third appointment with her and she released me as clear.

Then the itching started all over again. All in different places. My hands and feet are clear. But my back and scalp- where usually the scabies are not interested - are bothering me.

We still are washing clothing, towels and sheets daily. So now I will restart the treatment with Permethrin.

Truly. This ain’t for sissies.

It’s a common misconception to associate scabies solely with poverty. In the DR, we've seen scabies affect anyone, regardless of socioeconomic status. While poor living conditions and overcrowding can increase the risk of scabies, the mites usually spread through close physical contact, so people from all walks of life can be affected.

If you have a job or lifestyle that involves meeting a lot of people, or if you have young children who go to school and play with other kids, avoiding scabies in the DR becomes as important as avoiding drinking tap water.

Once you’ve experienced the challenge of getting rid of it, you not only learn the cure and what to do next time but you also discover effective ways to prevent it .
