A few years ago I met a very nice old lady, at a Days Inn in skokie, Illinois. She happenned to have a photo album with a bunch of great old Santo Domingo pics.

When she found out I was from the DR, her face lit up and she told me to wait there because she wanted to show me something. She came back with a notebook with lots of pics. It turns out that her late husband had been a marine during the intervention.

She told me that she had her own home but lived there at the Days inn at a discounted rate because she had no children or relatives and she felt lonely.

Rural elementary school circa 1940

Under Trujillo, elementary schools introduced English to students from a young age. From grades 8 and 12 students also received French language education atop the English from elementary.

Maybe some private schools had English at the elementary level, I never had it. English and French from 8-12.

I had English in elementary all the way from 1st grade to the last year of HS. French was started on 8th grade to the end of HS.

About all private schools did so, well after Trujillo's demise. Prior to his parting, all schools had it, both public and private.

What school did you attend and what term for elementary?

Not public schools in Santo Domingo Pichardo. Mr. AE was in school throughout the 50s and 60s [before AND after Trujillo's death] and he was never taught English in any of them.

I attended public school in Ingenio Angelina (first-5th); grade 6 in Yaguate, San Crist?bal, also public. Intermediate public school (7-8) in San Pedro de Macoris. Only at the high school level I had foreign language.

It was around 1958-59 when English was introduced into the public system on the elementary level, later than private schools. It was due to a lack of teachers able to impart the lessons as required. I attended Instituto Evangelico since elementary and had English since Day 1.

Most public schools in SD and Santiago did include it in the elementary grades at the time.

It was later dropped from elementary at public schools after Trujillo's death.

In my case, I went to a Catholic school (Colegio Cardenal Sancha in Alma Rosa I) in the late 80's-entire 90's, and they only got to teach us English from 7th grade upwards. French would be introduced at 13th grade (primero de bachillerato here).

You went to Colegio Cardenal Sancha? I lived with Hermanas de la Caridad del Cardenal Sancha in the capital (Colegio Santa Clara, en la zona colonial) during my high school years.
