I know--I understand that's what it says, but when you actually go to the website (https://servicios.migracion.gob.do/) to complete the application, you need a medical certificate and proof of solvency. Or at least in my case, it would not let me proceed to submit it until I uploaded those documents.🤷‍♀️. Their actual application has not yet caught up with their instructions. lol.

Re the medical certificate--When you're trying to request an extension online, the government website requires the medical certificate to be uploaded and a bank statement to be uploaded to show proof of solvency.

It didn’t ask me to do that, I did mine last Christmas so maybe it’s changed.

If you can get the legal maximum (30+90) extension without paying online, then is it not better to pay when you leave? Number one, there is no risk of double paying and number two, as in my case, I never know exactly how long I want to stay, (60, 90, 120) so I would only pay for the time actually stayed? Also, When is a medical required? Thank you DR1.

The point is that if you extend online, then you are legally in the country so if anything happens to you and the police are involved for example, you are legally here. If you just overstay then “technically” you are not legally in the country and this “could” cause problems, in theory. And in theory you could be removed. However, nobody seems to be able to give an example of someone who did actually have such problems. The debate on whether it is a problem to overstay without extending has been rehashed on here many many times and I think most of us dont’ want to see it repeated, so it’s worth searching for other threads on this subject.

My question is, will they give you the online extension without paying? If so, what is the benefit of paying online if they may ask for the monies again at the airport? Thank you

If you extend online I am not sure if you definitely have to pay or if you can do it for free. And if you have extended the only time they will charge you at the airport is if you have stayed for more days than you extended for. So if you extended for 90 bit actually stayed for 130 they would work out what the fee for 130 would be then deduct what you paid online and you just pay the difference. That's how it went with me.

If you ever have to demonstrate that you're legal...

it would be nice to have a receipt.... showing it

As soon as you extend they send you a document from Migración to confirm that your stay is extended. It’s only a one-page thing and says your stay is extended exclusively for tourist purposes, and that you must leave the country before xx date.

One thing to watch for anyone who does extend is that some nationalities can only drive using their driving licence for up to three months. Even if you extend to 120 days, this is still the case, so although you are legally in the country in month 4, you are not able to drive.

I know a guy that is here for over 30 years on a tourist visa. He comes in and out of the DR all the time, has a car all the time, and drives all the time. And NEVER had a problem...............

Until that one black day he has a problem. You know a roulette wheel played red for this customer at the casino for oh....the longest time and THEN one day they spinned the wheel and it was black. Roulette wheels do not have a memory or historicall data. It is what it is.

Slightly off topic, but a basic question. In regards to arriving at the airport (let's say SDQ), do you deal with showing your tourist card extension document or paying your overstay (if that is the case) at some office prior to passing through security and going to immigration or do you deal with it when going through immigration normally like all the other tourists? My Spanish is pretty poor so if there is an office or desk I need to visit before passing through security and visiting immgration that would be helpful for me to know.

I've never done it, but it's hard to imagine it would be done anywhere else besides at migracion after you go through security.

It's been a bit over a year for me, but from what I remember you first get your boarding pass, then go thru security, then migracion. They look at your passport and send you to the money lady if you're over 30 days. If not then you go to your gate. The money lady will tell you how much you owe. It's not worth arguing or discussing with them. If you want to go you pay.

It may be that when paying online, the payment gets attached to your passport - like your e-ticket-
and you you just get let through

Let us know. we have never had a report on this that I know of

You can either pay when you are approved for the tourist extension or you can pay at the airport on departure. Fee amount is the same, so I just pay on departure.

I'm assuming if you decide to pay online once you receive the extension, but then decide to overstay the extension, they charge you the difference at the airport on departure, but I'm not 100% sure.

The difference is that by extending online you become legal for your entire stay.

Paying at the airport leaves you exposed & illegal during your stay.

Not a problem unless you run into some trouble....
legals & illegals might get different treatment/options
