BTW, forgot to mention
"Do you think they are paying people off so that Trip Advisor takes away all bad reviews?"

It's not that I think so my dear, it's that I've gone through this TripAdvisor posting failure, as well as two of my friends, and we all have a proof, so we KNOW IT FROM EXPERIENCE that our reviews got removed, there is no guessing here.

Yes, they heard the feedback many times - but you know what? - they DON'T CARE! Tourists don't know about DR1 and the owners discovered one could wiggle with TripAdvisor and get bad reviews removed so the tourists will always be there, so why bother about some crappy feedback?? Very clever, eh?

Where do we start here... Let's go down the line....

1.I don't care about the price if I enjoy the place, so this is a non-issue for me, but the truth is, every time we ordered we got less and less food for the same money.

2. Not sure what you mean. This is exactly my point, you guys think that because of the beach location everything goes. It's not like you could be better or worse just because you are on the beach.

3. Don't give me this garbage about 2 pans. I ordered 2 pans in 2008 and they combined portions back then too, but back then they were not tring to skimp you and give you less food. Back then one portion of shrimp had 18 (!) large shrimps in it. Now it has 10 (!). The price is a little higher now. Combining dishes is absolutely irrelevant here, we get half the food now either way.

4. I'm absolutely well aware how much lobsters cost, they are all under 900 pesos in Cabarete in Otra Cosa and in Bliss where the setting is much nicer and the ingredients are higher quality. Like 100 pesos ($2.5) more than in Papi's, big difference!

5. How much do restaurant workers make in Cabarete? From what you are saying sounds like they are millionaires and from what I hear from the locals is 6,000-8,000 pesos a month! ($150-200)

6. Last time when I was in the restaurant I heard a guy talking to the waiter because they were ignored for 2 hours and none even bothered taking their order! They were young and waited all this time because they were embarrassed to bother anyone and didn't complain until they were about to faint from not eating. Sounds like a normal thing, happens everywhere on the island, right?

7. The sauce hasn't changed? Where are the fresh tomatoes then?? It's still not bad, but it does taste different and is more watery. You can say it's arguable, but chopped fresh tomatoes aren't an illusion, so where are they and why have they vanished as well as the additional 8 shrimps? Why lambi and ceviche are no served in hat-like plates where you can accommodate much less food than before? The hat-plates were a 2012 invention.

8. You are being redundant making your points about pricing over and ove, everything doesn't just rotate around the price although I understand by the way you run your restaurant that in your head it does. And where in Cabarete do you stare at 4 walls? Otra Cosa has a gorgeous scenic ocean view and Bliss has a unique Spanish courtyard outdoors with a beautiful pool in the middle. Not even mentioning other places on the beach, I'm only naming the places with my favorite food.

Love?? Don't say something you don't mean, what love you are talking about? Love for pigs? You are in this marriage for money, honey!

Summer Forever,

First, let me state that i really like your name. Very cool! Secondly, let me address a few things that you mentioned that i feel are just a tad bit misleading. However, before i do that, let me ask you a couple of questions in order to ascertain if you are a certain person:

1. Are you a certain someone who used to be a member here on DR1, but got kicked off back in July or August of 2011?

2. Are you the same guy who tried to tarnish a certain Italian restaurant on Cabarete beach 4 years ago, and after being obnoxious with the restaurant owner, he physically kicked you out of his restaurant and banned you for life?

3. Are you a certain someone who frequents restaurant & bar establishments in Cabarete and then starts these rants about "Obama-Care," "Liberals, "the coming Armageddon," "Sinners over-taking USA," etc.

4. Are you that guy that is known to preach and pontificate on Sundays in Sosua?

5. "Are you that guy that got banned from "Dominican Today," Dominican Central," and "DR1?"

Ok, if you're not that guy, great...i can debate with you. If you are him, well then, as UB40 said: "There's a rat in the kitchen..."

1. Ok, first, i don't know what "grease" you are referring to in the garlic cream sauce? They make the sauce right in front of the dining room in an open kitchen. You ever watch them? each order gets the sauce made right there. I sit and watch them. I take pictures of it. I've posted the pictures right here on DR1 in one of my threads. The sauce is straight forward: heavy cream, olive oil, garlic, and butter---all the necessary ingredients to make you fart for days and make your loved ones run for cover. My family make me sleep outside on the balcony with the dog underneath a mosquito net after i drink the garlic sauce. Even the dog runs for cover. True story.

2. I believe you when you say your reviews have not been posted. But if you are this crazy nutcase that frequents Cabarete bars & restaurants--then i know why they have not posted--and so do you. Am i to understand that you think there is some kind of "conspiracy" going on here between "Trip Advisor" and Papi's? or do you think their high rating among reviewers is a freak accident?

3. When you say that you are "Old Timers" here in Cabarete, what exactly does that mean? I've been working a few doors down from Papi's since 2007, i know the place fairly well. I know many of the staff, and i've been eating there for the last seven years.

4. When you say the owners were rude and unwelcoming, can you be more specific...provide some details about what they did to you specifically? That would be my first thing that i would go into detail about. That would be constantly on my mind.I would let people know exactly what they did to me. That would be paramount on my list of complaints.

5. What is your name? When people provide their real names, and some details about who they are, and what they do, i tend to believe them more, and trust them more.

In essence, people who provide their real name, i see them backing up their comments with their true identities on the line. I like that. I can get behind that. They're not just hiding behind some made-up name or facade. For example, my name is Frank G. I work on Cabarete beach. I'm easy to find; i'm easy to talk too. it's easy to find people who know me, and know where i work. when i say something, it's easy to verify if its true or not.

So far, i don't know the first thing about you--whether you're even a real person or not? The OP who started this thread is named Davidz. he has added his real name to everything he writes. I like that...i can get behind that...i know he is a real person.

Ok, let's start with that. I just got off work now. I'm ready to discuss the finer points of garlic, heavy cream sauce and farting.

Where do we start here... Let's go down the line....

1.I don't care about the price if I enjoy the place, so this is a non-issue for me, but the truth is, every time we ordered we got less and less food for the same money.

My Answer: I think this is an exaggeration. exponentially, you would have only one shrimp on your plate after a certain amount of visits.

2. Not sure what you mean. This is exactly my point, you guys think that because of the beach location everything goes. It's not like you could be better or worse just because you are on the beach.

My answer: I totally agree with this statement.

My Answer: Half the portions as before? Really? They went from 18 shrimp down to 10? I can't imagine people would still go there if this was true. I can't even imagine the restaurant would be packed every night if this was true.

4. I'm absolutely well aware how much lobsters cost, they are all under 900 pesos in Cabarete in Otra Cosa and in Bliss where the setting is much nicer and the ingredients are higher quality. Like 100 pesos ($2.5) more than in Papi's, big difference!

My answer: Fresh lobster is fresh lobster--regardless what cream sauce you pour on it.

5. How much do restaurant workers make in Cabarete? From what you are saying sounds like they are millionaires and from what I hear from the locals is 6,000-8,000 pesos a month! ($150-200)

My Answer: The workers make around $8000 pesos monthly--which is a salary. Plus they have to be provided with health insurance, plus 10% of their wages have to be set aside each year they work for you in case of termination.

My Answer: Long waits at Papi's is normal. Always has been. Look around the restaurant and beach and you understand why. They're very busy. So now people are nearly fainting? really? why not just get up and leave. I would. Wouldn't you? I wouldn't hang around and wait until the sun came up unless the food was very good.

My Answer: For the love of god, man...what the hell is the big deal about hat-plates? Are you saying its a conspiracy to rip you off? Too much conspiracy talk here. I got a beverage here, man...don't make me spill it.

My Answer: I love Otra Cosa and Bliss...but i like sitting on the beach in the middle of everything more. but hey, that's just me. I'm crazy like that.

Love?? Don't say something you don't mean, what love you are talking about? Love for pigs? You are in this marriage for money, honey!
My Answer: What money? Are you joking?

Love Frank

Summer Breeze,

I think a recap is in order here. Let's review some exceptionally bright statements you've made.

1. You say that the portions at Papi's are only half the size as before. You state that the shrimp count has gone from 18 to 10. If this true, why are they so damn busy? Why are they the busiest restaurant on Cabarete beach?

2. You say that "Trip Advisor" is in effect censoring your review, as well as two more people you know who also have written reviews. Ok, i'll take your word on that, however, are you also suggesting that there is a conspiracy going on here? I think you insinuated that Papi's is paying someone off, or that "Trip Advisor" is on the take somehow? Did i misunderstand that?

3. You say that i make it sound like the restaurant employees here are "Millionaires!" Really? How so? I'm curious about how you came to this conclusion? I can only recall explaining the law here on this island, and what the employees here are entitled to as "Full-time" employee--which includes: 1.) A monthly salary, 2.) a 10% yearly severance pay, 3.) Vacation money. 4.) Double pay for the month of December. Now, how did you come up with a "millionaire" package out of all of that? Before you answer that, please, for the love of god, be careful, man...i got a beverage here in my lap.

4. You suggest that i'm in "The marriage for money." What exactly does that mean? You understand that i'm just a glorified bartender right? You don't think that i'm a restaurant owner? Be careful, man, remember there's a beverage here. I make the same salary as everyone else here on the beach--ask anyone who knows me--my wage does not even begin to cover my gas money for my weekly motorcycle trips. True story. My wage does not even begin to cover how many times a week i eat out. What? You thought this huge stomach of mine just made itself out of thin air?

Remember, i don't have any dog in this fight. It doesn't matter to me one bit what Papi's does or does not do. It has zero effect on me or my lifestyle. I eat out every single day of the week--365 days a year. I do not cook. I can't even make toast. Although, i must say, i'm pretty good at Peanut butter & jelly sandwiches.

But look, i like to be objective and give credit where credit is do. It's not by some freak accident that Papi's is so over-whelming busy every evening. It's not by some freak accident that they have so many regular customers. And despite whether or not you or your so-called "Old Timers" think of the place, the fact of the matter is that--business wise--they are doing exceptionally well, and one look at their restaurant business on any given night--but especially on the weekends--only verifies this, and drives the point home exceedingly and prosperously clear.

Who wouldn't love to have just half of Papi's business every week?

Wait....are you ready for this....Love Frank

Obviously he has no stake in it, that's why he is writing novels in the middle of the night just to reinstate justice and support Papi's! Most things Frank is babbling about I have no idea what they are, like all this guys that were banned, I never even heard of it. I'm sure things happen just like everywhere else, but I don't know these people and personally has always felt welcome in every other place in Cabarete except for Papi's since the owners have changed.
I don't even find it necessary to respond as Frank's post speaks for itself... I'm used to more classy conversations, sorry...

I'll repeat about TripAdvisor though because it's important and I'd like people to know.... there is no conspiracy, just a simple unfortunate "pay to play" business practice. I mistakenly believed TripAdvisor was an independent source of information, but I learned from experience that the reviews (and trust me I made sure no profanity or abuse or anything like that was involved, just my observations) are being controlled by the owners and it must be a paid service that is offered by TripAdvisor, clearly it's not an exclusive service offered to Papi's, it's just something that as a property owner you can choose to pay for. Shame on them, but evidently money makes the world go around...

SummerForever,

I think i know who you are. You are being to secretive here about your identity...this is bringing up all kinds of red flags in my head. I sit at the bar and talk to a lot of people every night. I think i know who you are, but i want to be sure before i out you in public. Why not sign your real name? Do you live here in Cabarete?

Please come into O'shay's tonight after 5pm. I'm working all night. I'll be sitting at the bar. I'm easy to spot. Just ask the bartender for Frank. I want to buy you a drink. I want you to either confirm or deny my suspicions about your identity.

If you're not who i think you are, great. I'll buy you two drinks! If you are who i think you are, then we can laugh about it.

Come in, i can talk to anyone about anything. Look for me at the bar...i'll either be speaking to a topless mannequin in the corner of the bar, or one of the stray dogs that sit at the bar in the corner. However, sometimes, if the mannequin is busy and the dog is occupied, i might be talking to myself.

One thing, however...i cannot guarantee "Classy Conversation." But i can guarantee one of the most lively, animated, historically inaccurate conversations you've ever heard about love, sex, bestiality, and midgets. I'm an expert on all things pantomime and un-classy.

Love Frank

Fair enough Lindsey, but you are the only person, by now on page 13 who has spoken up in favour. I would not take a restaurant out where one person had had a bad experience. The guide only had room for 10 restaurants in Sosua, Cabarete and POP, and was looking for a wide range to suit the different tastes and requirements of the tourists for whom it is mostly written. Hence excellent food with price no object, romantic beach, interesting menu at reasonable price, authentic Dominican food etc. Good service, and consistency are also important. It did not seem to me that the people who commented on this thread would necessarily now have put Papi's on the list of the best 10 restaurants across all areas and price ranges on the North Coast. From what I have experienced, and I have eaten there, and according to the people I have spoken to who live in the area, plus the comments I have seen on this site and others, led me to believe I would be doing tourists who read the guide a disservice if Papi's was still in there as one of the 10 on the North Coast.

I'm not sure why I would want to talk to you. I'm not in this for the buffoonish jokes nor for socializing. Are you the owner of Papi's? If you aren't then I can assure you that you don't know me and I don't know you and I don't see any reason why we should meet. If you are, I've said everything I had to say. I'm not here to make friends (nor enemies), I'm here to support the cause. I am one of those who has experienced the unpleasant change of ownership at Papi's, I saw this thread and wanted to contribute, all based on my personal experience. I saw the outrageous post by the owners calling us all, complaining customers, figurally "pigs", I thought (just as many others did) it was absolutely unacceptable. Cabarete dining scene overall is super friendly despite the slow service (which doesn't bother me much) and the new owners of Papi's don't fit into this scene. They told me personally on more than one occasion that we could leave if there was something we didn't like and reading this thread I found out that I was not the only one in this situation. And to everyone's surprise people don't like to be treated like this for their own money, so it all comes back, eventually. There is really nothing much to discuss...

Frank, the important question is how many inches Papi?s is from Janet?s Supermercado. There are other restaurants that are closer to Janet?s, so the other restaurants are clearly better. I just hope Papi?s doesn?t fall to the #6 of the bed-and-breakfast?er?restaurants in Cabarete on Trip Advisors. That would be really embarrassing.

I'm done with your idiotic argument. This is not about what I should or shouldn't have done when I was unhappy with my meal. I informed people that I interact with on a daily basis, after previously discussing with the owner.

You seem to get off on espousing ridiculous opinions about trivial issues...especially anything to do with restaurant pricing or service, or the differences between Sosua and Cabarete vs. other locations.

Go back to giving great advice like telling a group of 24 year olds looking for a 4 star resort to stay at a whore house. You really find these posts amusing? They're certainly not helpful, nor interesting to those with the mentality of someone over 14 years old.

You rock!!! ;)

We, the owners of La Casita De Papi in Cabarete, take this opportunity to thank those who brought this thread to our attention and urged us to respond to the anonymous nature of the internet. We took ownership of the restaurant April 30, 2010. One or both of us has been present during dinner service every night. Complaints are dealt with on the spot. Respect to Georges, the 'a la Papi' sauce is an existing recipe that has been cooked at La Casita for over 12 years, by the same chef for 7 years. Our staff are human beings, including the 8 month pregnant woman who apparently failed to deliver the complimentary mamajuana. La Casita de Papi is a busy restaurant and we get the pick of fresh seafood on the north coast. All product is closely monitored from catch to plate, service size is calibrated and has been since day 1 in adherence to what preceded us. We do not sell salmon and have never done so. The original menu hangs on the wall to compare price.
Thanks again,
Martial and John

It is the story of a crow and a nightingale, do you know it?
A crow and a nightingale are sitting on a branch in the forest
and each of them pretend to sing the best .....
crow BBBBrrrhhhh
nightingale SSrrriihhhh
Both of them say "it is me who sings the best "
Not coming to a conclusion, there arrives a little pig in the pass of the forest, just like that.
The crow says
"Hey you that is perfect, you are here, you are going to decide for us!"
and the little pig says, "that is perfect for I have nothing to do"
The pig sits on a little bush crossing his little legs.
"Go on" says the little pig, "sing"
the crow BBBrrreuhhh
the nightingale SSSSrrriihhhh
The little pig thinks and says
"Me, I say that it is the crow who sings the best"
Of course the nightingale bursts into tears!
And the pig says to the nightingale
"You are crying, normal, it is because you lost!"
and the nightingale answered
"No, I don't cry because I lost, I cry because I have been judged by a pig"

The most outrageous joke provided the context! Thank you the owners of Papi for calling your customers pigs, I think we shall all remember this!

Start posting your honest reviews on Tripadvisor and we'll have Papi back in 2 weeks asking forgiveness for his rude reply.. either that or a NEW papi will come on and say he would never reply so rudely. The response that we've gotten is very embarrassing and I hope people don't assume this is a Dominican thing or anything.. I've seen similar responses from restaurants on a downhill slope all around the world.

Not an option, unfortunately, Sayanora.... They pay to get the negative reviews removed!!! Apparently, TripAdvisor isn't as fair as we all thought. I wrote a negative review and it was removed and I was blocked from further reviewing this restaurant without any explanations. When I started investigating further, turned out I wasn't the only one, so money makes the world go around.... :(

Not as outrageous (and incredibly funny!) as this joke, though.

"This is airplane is going to crash and the pilot says i have good news and bad news. The bad news is this plane is going down and quick, the good news is if we throw people off the plane we might be able to recover. the pilot say ok lets start alphabetically, (A) are there and African Americans on the plane, no one answers. (B) Are there any Black people on the plane, no one answers. (C) Are there any colored people on the plane, no one answers. So then a black kid says to his dad i thought we were African American, black, and colored. His dad says no son today were [Nword']s we'll let the mexicans go before us."
