The civil society organization, Citizen Participación (Participación Ciudadana), in its final report on the 5 July presidential and congressional election warns that cash continues to play an overwhelming role in election campaigns and political activity. Nevertheless, the civic watchdog group stresses that the past presidential and congressional elections are a clear defeat for clientelism as a way of winning elections. They added that the results are a signal to political parties that money does not buy everything and that they should abandon these practices.

“Political party and candidate spending remain a dark, unchecked area susceptible to penetration by resources from corruption, drug trafficking or other illicit businesses,” says the spokespeople for the civic group.
