One certainly wonders how this happens:

EDEESTE publishes list of delinquent clients with million-dollar debts, including TV channels, religious broadcasters, cabins, shops and a political party

The Eastern Electricity Distribution Company (EDEESTE) has revealed today a list of 227 clients who have accumulated total debts of RD$662,296,122.24, of which 41% correspond to late fees.

And yet, let one of us normal folks go 1 day over 30 days past due and we'll get our power cut.

I recall it was many years ago when a similar news article was published. Entrepreneurs, rich people, if I may etc etc. none of them paying bills because they did not want to. Yet, they continued receiving free electricity... I think at that time they even published photos of their houses etc...

For me, dealing with EDEs is just one of those things you have to accept if you want to live in the DR and do not have solar etc. There's really nothing I can do. It's not my country, it's theirs. If I started complaining or fighting, I highly doubt I would get any results.

That really is ridiculous. As you say, a poor person doesn't pay on time and their power is cut in a couple of days. Talk about corruption!

It was Euclides Gutiérrez Félix

It was many years ago there was a controversy about an old time official, Euclides Gutiérrez Félix, who wore many hats in government. He refused to pay his EDESUR bills amounting to RD$3.6 million. Nuria Piera, the journalist, communicated her opinions regarding the poor behavior of this official.

The powerful and well-connected do as they please.

The normal folks always get f****d.

So nothing or not much has changed.
The company I worked for in 1992 rented a house in Piantini for us, $ US 1000 on top of the house of ex general Cruz Brea, he built it for his daughter, swiss style.
All went well, paying 10-11000 Pesos luz a month.
After a month the bill came …42.000 pesos…. We, or the company, didnt pay expecting a credit. But no, nothing, next month the same amount.
I called and they sent a electricista.
He found out that Cruz Brea had connected all his A/C’s, freezers and all other stuff to our meter.
Talk to the office, said the electric man.
I went and was advised not to mention it to the general, for your own sake, but to move. In three months we left.
To Paraíso …sixth floor…another head-ache.

I think this is a sign of change. The fact that they feel comfortable with naming and shaming powerful rich people, and they have an expectation that they will pay, is certainly new. At least to me it is.

A sign of change would've been if they sent an electrician with a soldier in tow to cut the wires like they do with average citizens.

Exactly 1 day late after they credited my payment to the wrong account they were in front to pull one of our meters

Q: Good afternoon ChatGPT, kindly let us know who is the largest debtor of electricity in the Dominican Republic

A: In the Dominican Republic, the largest debtor of electricity is indeed the government. The country’s electricity distribution companies, known as EDEs (Electricity Distribution Companies), face significant financial challenges partly due to unpaid government bills and subsidies required to keep electricity prices low for consumers. These issues contribute to the high levels of public debt and fiscal deficits in the energy sector.

Ask your AI how many Dominicans are stealing electricity and water.
We have a guy building huge villas in our neighborhood making illegal water taps.
He got caught last week with a 2" Tee in the main line ahead of his meter. This was after everyone downstream was getting no water. But he has 3 other 3000 Sq foot villas with no meters (Corraplata can't figure that out)
And there is an 8-unit apartment building with an illegal tap (No meter) and at least 2 more multi unit places I know have illegal taps.

Thanks but I'm an independent contractor. I'm sure you can do your own research! Maybe you forgot or you were not yet in DR a few years back when the national papers published the electric debt of the govt and claimed that the people would suffer extended outages until these bills showed signs of improvement.

Your run-of-the-mill blue collar argument style is a worn out hat. I'm sure you realize the irony of the article that published and shames these "millionaire" level electric bills, but in the other hand, omits the list's pole position! Have a blessed day sir

Random erroneous capitalization alert! Wait, what? Who is stealing light from themselves?
