Not consider, it is! :pirate:

Hopefully the town will become once again a nice place for people.

It's looking a bit better as we speak. Stopped by one of my hangouts for a quick beer this evening and there quite a few customers. The owner won't let unescorted "ladies" in and for once nobody tried to hit me for a cigarette or beer. It didn't really bother me when they did but it was cool having a beer and chatting with a buddy without the hassle.

There was and is a perception, rightly or wrongly, that Sosua was becoming increasingly more dangerous with murders, robberies, increased violent crime and drugs. The status quo wasn't sitting well with the government, the tourist industry...etc. I remember Eddy posting that if this mayor got elected she would clean up the town. Looks like that's happening.

So, Sosua is soon going to know as Boytown. I guess that it is much better being know as a destination where they guys can sit around drinking and not having to go through being pestered by icky women.

Just back this minute from Pedro Clisante after a nice supper and apart from the streets being a bit cleaner and no shoeshine boys, life goes on as usual I'm happy to report. The only bar with windows, Latino's, was empty but the others seemed to be doing a fair trade and there were ladies unarrested up and down the street as usual.Good! Made me feel better and now prepared to say" Gloom Mongers, Keep it to yourselves!).

Where there any unescorted girls in the bars? My turn to cook dinner tonight so stuck at the house. You know dishes and all,

One thing we can all agree on is that Sosua needs to be cleaned up..A LITTLE.. Lets just hope that some of the changes are realistic..And that the changes that are made are not just made based on the greed of certain people.

Maybe try keeping the working girls off the streets during the day is a fair change. Let the girl work thier trade after 11 ..Not many familys with children will be on the streets that late, and most couples who dont like the club scene around PC can surely avoid it..

Unescorted girls was only allowed in the "covered" places, like Latino. Merengue had removed the big curtains, and all unescorted girls was denied acces, but they were free to go upstairs to the disco.
Rather ridiculous realy, typical Dominican.

If you are in total control of the situation in the town you know what your plans for the future - you make the price on the land in the ghost town go down and then buy it at the simbolic price (very close to "0"). Next thing - you opent new bars and clubs at the same places - only they will belong to other people (team of new Mayor). They came for 8 years and they have to take all advantage of their position in town .... The history of busness shows us such examples of using information (the Mayor plans everything and knows what will be next), power (the Mayor has the right to do everything that is needed to achive the goal) and money.

What LAND are you talking about. The bars and shops on Pedro Clisante? In reality, the only places in town are Merenge Bar/Classico, Latino (Sosua Life), El flow, & Rumba. Sure there are plenty of other places along PC but all pretty small and in reality not competition for the main places. And the main four places I just mentioned are not going anywhere. The only other game in town is "La Passion" and his position is only getting better every minute all this nonsense is going on. Hey, good for him, he invested a lot of money in the place and at just the right time.

So then what, all the small bars and restaurants go out of business. The small hotels like New Garden, Tierra Linda, Colibri, Rancho, Yaroa, Europa, Velaria, Paraiso, Ochidee, etc. go out of business. OK, they are probably all owned by foreigners so they are going to leave these investments and sell them for nothing to the "team of the new Mayor". Now what happens when the peripheral businesses that are owned and run by the locals go out of business. The colmados, call centers, car rental places, money changers, pharmacies, internet centers, lanudry centers, gymnasiums, salons, nail centers, furniture stores, computer stores, hardware stores, etc., etc., etc. Remember these are the people who put the mayor in office. Then, according to your post #72, the mayor's office "get's rid of Los Charamicos and Las Piedras", which by the way also helped put her in office. This will make for some pretty ****ed-off locals who just elected this mayor.

So now Sosua is left as an abandoned ghost-town, it had a lousy reputation before all this, but now it is a ghost-town with a lousy reputation, terrific. Now, the "team of the new Mayor" who supposedly bought all this "LAND"? for near zero, with their great entrepreneural wisdom, will now turn Sosua into a prosperous town and as you say in your post #72 "the new Sosua will appear - those land lots will be golden." I would love to see one example of a tourist city in this country that deteriorated into a ghost town and was then resurected into a prosperous, functioning city.

Sorry, not happening, not in this lifetime.

If that is really the plan they have for Sosua well, see my original post #3 ---Have you read the Avianus fable "Killing the goose that laid the golden eggs."???

Let's just hope that within time things will play out a little less dramatic. Let's hope once they realize all these dramatic steps are just that "drama", and really doing nothing but ruining the businesses that are already here they will take a different course. Merengue Bar/Classico already have taken down those ridiculous curtains, did'nt even last two days. This BS hopefully won't go on for too long.

Sosua is in need of change, but certain specific elements need to be targeted. Arresting all unescorted women on the streets and forcing the clubs on PC to enclose themselves behind walls is just foolish.

That's just my opinion, I may be wrong.

has anyone got any pictures of these 'walls' and thick block-out curtains just so us not living in Sosua can get an idea of the depth of the concern?

i would like to see these walls. my dominican-york friends find this whole ordeal funny and entertaining. during the holidays when they go home they said they were going to drop by sosua just to see.
i agree with rsg (that's a first !!) that the unescorted girls should have a time when they can be in the bars.
DR-commuter, you forgot to mention CMP.
do these same rules apply to the casinos like playa chiquita and the casino by sosua bay ?

Those places are completely enclosed already. I was in the After One Club next to the Sosua Bay Casino Saturday Night very late and it was very crowded. It certainly didn't seem to be hurt by the "new rules".

Hey Ian, I will take a picture of Latino's and send it to you. It's the only bar that is all closed in with glass. Seacrets down the street has put up a curtain and the curtain at Classico's came down after one day. No other bar has done anything at this point and it's business as usual on the strip. I'm not saying that other bars may not take action this week, but people are blowing this way out of proportion. Yes, the politure are more militant with the girls, but I saw many girls sitting at the bars on the weekend. I would say a choice of 50 or more. How many do you really need? You would not notice a difference from your last trip except that there is less trash in the streets and less shoeshine kids. Things are a little slow for this time of the year, but I believe it's caused more by the world economy. The world afterall does not revolve around sosua as some may believe :squareeye

that's exactly what I thought... when people on here talk about declining tourist numbers or whatever, they'd do very well to bear in mind a google search for 'sosua dominican republic' returns the dr1 site first. Anyone unfortunate enough to find their way to this forum would surely be put off by all the ****ing and moaning on here... even negative **** like this, from another thread, in response to a very good initiative...
so the hookers have a new place to meet with their clients. great idea.
seriously, **** off with that. Be the diplomats, not the naysayers.

Exactly right. We have enough of the travel agents discouraging people from travelling to the North Coast, we don't need our own people doing it.

On a positive note, Sosua is snow free!!!!
