President Luis Abinader delivered on his campaign promise to provide pensions to former sugar cane workers. The workers had protested for around 30 years demanding pensions. With Decree 692-20, President Abinader announced 295 sugar cane mill workers would receive a special pension for RD$10,000 a month. The beneficiaries need to complete paperwork but the government says the pensions will be paid no later than March 2021. The pensions will primarily benefit workers of the San Pedro de Macoris.

“The payment of the pension will be considered effective, and with the right to retroactive payment after the deadline has expired,” establishes Decree 692-20.

Article two of the decree specifies that if the beneficiaries are already enjoying a state pension, they may opt for the one that is most favorable to them.
