I am sure Brazil has corruption. And so does DR. But how can it be worse than Cuba that has had the same government for over 50 years and Haiti that never really gets anywhere despite lots of international help.

what exactly do you understand corruption to be? so what if they have had the same government for over 50 years? what does that have to do with corruption? how about the fact that they have one of the most advanced medical establishments in the western hemisphere? what about their achievements in education? what about their achievements in the arts? sports?music? public housing? what about the low homelessness figures? low aids numbers? just because they are not all driving Lamborghinis means that they have not gotten ahead? try to remember that they achieved all they did under the US embargo. jeezus.

Yes they have accomplished so much by jailing and killing innocent civilians and forcing on them poverty so much so they have died in the thousands trying to leave. What paradise! What (lack of) infrastructure!

At any rate it's days are numbered unless Chavez keeps them afloat if he is around long enough or if they don't lynch him first. Socialism is not self sufficient.

I think Leonel did more harm to this country than all the past presidents combined.

Eddy, I know your heart is in the right place, but sometimes you you get carried away. This overstatement is a good example.

Yea you're right. I'll change that to "more than any other past president". I think what's what I meant to say anyway. ;) It's Sunday, I've just finished doing the dishes and washing my clothes, changing the bed, so I'm going go grab a cool Brahma somewhere. The economy is so bad I can't even afford a maid. :) :)

Just look around you. Talk to people. Leonel's travels, big parking lots, worthless holes in the ground (Metro) and the 'let's raise the taxes to pay off these loans" attitude. The country is bankrupt. Whomever replaces him, be it PLD or PRD, are going to have their hands full. At least 20+ years will be required to get this country back on it's feet.

I believe people said exactly the same things when Hippo was in power. You live on the north coast in an area dependant on the Tourist industry. The poor global economy combined with a local lack of vision has affected your area very negatively. Granted the government could, should be doing a lot more and wasting less money, but the lack of money on the north coast isn't the fault of the government.

I Am Convinced That "BAD DAYS" Are Coming To The DR!

The World's Economy is in very bad shape.I believe that it will only get worse in the months and years to come. The DR is very tied to the US economy, which I also believe is in for more bad economic times. The DR is bailed out by international loans, drug money, and money sent home by Dominicans living abroad. The drug money will continue, but the loans, and money sent home will go down. All the above will contribute to "Bad Times" to come.Couple that with the fact that Leonel and his "Band-of-Thieves" is almost positive that they only have a little more than 1 more year to steal as much as the can,and then Hipolito will come in,and he and his "Band-of-Thieves" will have their hands in the "Cookie Jar"!I see prices continuing to skyrocket.I see hyper inflation, strikes, and "People Taking to the streets"!
I plan to get ready, and be prepared! I have been putting aside as many US dollars as I can,in US Banks.
When I return from Boston,in September,I will begin to stockpile, food, fuel, some basic medicines(I will bring more than usual from CVS Pharmacy).I know I sound like a "Survivalist",but I want to be able to take care of my family.I AM ARMED,and I can be dangerous,if need be!I will post my "LIST" of what I plan to have available,if the need arises,at a later date. I always have 20 five gallon water bottles "In Stock",I will go to thirty.I already have three propane tanks, maybe I'll go to four.Twelve years ago, after the big hurricane,I had to go out every day and search for water to drink, and fuel for my generator. This time I will be more prepared,if only for a big hurricane! My Dominican wife thought that since I was prepared for the hurricane, and her family, like most Dominicans, weren't,I should give them, food, water, and propane! I did give a small tank(Grill size") to her sister so she could cook.I have never seen that tank again, but then it's only been 12 years!:cheeky:That reminds me,(Note To Self, buy some BIG Yale padlocks at Home Depot) To keep out the "Scavengers"! :eek:gre:
"Better Safe Than Sorry"!
If Chavez dies(HOPE<HOPE!!) and the new leaders decide that they want to actually be paid for the oil the send to the DR,we could have real fuel shortages, and astronomical prices for all "Combustibles"! Then we can all use charcoal like the Haitians, and deforest the DR too!

I believe there is a saying. Power corrupts. Total power corrupts totally. Or something like that. It is not only about how much money is floating around government. If you can only get a house, car and a good job if you know the right people, and you are not against the government, then that is more corrupt than what I see here in the DR. More people can get ahead here and do what they want. Admittedly only if they have the money.

This has been discussed ad nausea. The Scandinavians and have a relatively homogeneous culture where Northern European cultural values impose a negative stigma associated with living on the "lam". I just saw a relevant documentary about a German family that moved from Germany to France to make less money but would no longer have to live with the ridicule of being on welfare. However, give the Scandinavians a few years though to indoctrinate their citizens into being takers like the Russians and E. Germans did.

As far as China, you have to be kidding. First of all, they only slaughtered millions of their own like the Russians to establish their grand experiment. I suppose a twisted form of morality would justify that in the name of "progress". Furthermore, China gradually has changed over to a market economy and will continue to do so as the leaders have long understood socialism at that level is not sustainable.

Eventually, there is no more wealth to transfer.

It's like a reverse Ponzi Scheme.

Additionally, at some point the producers see they aren't getting ahead of the looters, and see no point in being productive. Why work hard if there is no reward?

Sounds alot like US capiltalism. The capitalism Americans are so proud of only exist in theory.

Chip, just in case you wondered why i am backing out, it was this statement

As far as China, you have to be kidding. First of all, they only slaughtered millions of their own like the Russians to establish their grand experiment.

if my recollection of history serves me well, i remember something called the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, wherein large numbers of Africans were also slaughtered in order to set up the grand capitalist experiment in the New World.

"Maggie" Thatcher said it best.
"The only trouble with socialism is, sooner,or later, you run out of other peoples money to spend!"

Well in your bizarro world two wrongs equal a right apparently.

not exactly, Chip. however, if you are using the brutality of the founding fathers as an indictment of socialism, you might want to apply the same yardstick of measurement to capitalism. in that case you would have two wrongs making two wrongs.

Maggie Thatcher also said that there is no alternative to Neoliberalism. seems like the jury is still out on that one.
