I could never figure out the nonuse of plastic shopping bags. I use my bags for trash. If you don't use your grocery bags for trash do you buy plastic bags for trash?
Really, I like paper but I have to walk to do most of my shopping. Carrying reusable bags all over is a bit of a hassle. I use a little shopping cart if I'm going to buy a lot but for a quick run with my 2 dogs in tow a plastic bag with handles is good.
And what do people use for dog poo bags? I use the small bags from the Colmado for that.
Being Scandinavian, nonuse of grocery store plastic bags is something I'm used to even from around 25 years ago. Obviously, since a few years it's illegal to even sell those plastic bags, but even my parents used reusable bags... Granted, I realize Jan's point of doing the shopping on foot is not the same as going with the car, so carrying empty bags all over the place is not that pleasant. Been there done that...
Still:
1. Shopping bags: reusable sturdy plastic bags with like fiber in them. Like so:
Es klang zu schön, um wahr zu sein: Der Discounter Lidl warb damit, Kleidung aus fairer Produktion zu verkaufen. Nach einer Klage von Verbraucherschützern muss das Unternehmen die Reklame nun zurückziehen.

2. Waste management: For mixed waste, these bags:

What's the difference compared to traditional plastic shopping bag? Less plastic (it's thinner, yet not useless with garbage like the old Sirena bags for example), larger size and properly closable. The cost for a smaller bag around 3 EUR cents.
Food waste: no bag at all or a compostable bag or old newspaper
Dog poop: Poop bags. Compostable
I appreciate the latter two are not that common in the DR not that many people (?) use compost, but thought to mention...
Our old neighbor in POP purchased these huge garbage bags from PriceSmart, very smart move, it looked very nice. White, non-transparent, closable and with a light scent.
Disclaimer: While I hate the bags from Jumbo and Sirena, the bags from the Jose Luis supermarket in POP have in fact always been of excellent quality. Those we have used for garbage as well. They are thick and large, no trash would destroy them.
