I could never figure out the nonuse of plastic shopping bags. I use my bags for trash. If you don't use your grocery bags for trash do you buy plastic bags for trash?

Really, I like paper but I have to walk to do most of my shopping. Carrying reusable bags all over is a bit of a hassle. I use a little shopping cart if I'm going to buy a lot but for a quick run with my 2 dogs in tow a plastic bag with handles is good.

And what do people use for dog poo bags? I use the small bags from the Colmado for that.
I also use mine for the small trash cans around my house but they definitely add up. I end up with way more than I can use so I constantly have a bag full of bags! :) Recently I bought these bags on Amazon and they're great because unlike many of the reusable shopping bags (which I find bulky), these fold up so small, can be washed, the handles are long, etc. They hold much more than the grocery store plastic bags too. And, they can be used for more than just a quick walk to the grocery store. For 6 bags, the price is good. These are just one example but there are many on Amazon nowadays as more and more places are stopping the use of plastic bags:

Reusable bags

Doesn't help with the dog poop issue but I do feel like I'm doing my part, albeit small, to "save the planet" with these bags

Just as there are many examples along the lines of JD's post, there are many positive examples too.
I'm almost certain all of the plastic bottle recycling places are shipping them to China. I've seen a young Chinese guy (late 20's maybe) in a Black Mercedes who I see frequently at the metal collection places and I'm sure I've seen him at the plastic places.

Don't they have that funny looking boat cruising the Ozama? Isn't it supposed to be cleaning the river?

I think someone else made a report about the ship. I think it gave up the ghost. The main issue should be on how to stop the people from throwing trash in the river

I wish him the best, but it will take a couple of generations to turn it around.
Not in DR. It will take centuries.

A country awash in Styrofoam, plastic, disposable Chinese motos and where most prefer to dump their trash on empty lots rather than pay 500 pesos monthly for trash service, will not care about their rivers & oceans.

Heck they probably see floating plastic as free water toys.

A few generations maybe, but not centuries. I remember the litter along highways etc in Oregon when I was growing up, and that largely has gone away. The bottle/can deposit (you get money for recycling them) was a big part, and education/awareness played a role too. I know the dynamic is different here, but it can be done

Yes I remember the Lady Bird campaign in the late 50s and large fines for littering. But it's not like the Dominicans haven't seen clean neighborhoods. They just won't control their garbage.
I had a thread on this once before where I posted photos of one of the richest families on the island who throw their trash over thier wall, and have for years, over the wall of their Oceanview villa. The trash is literally 3-4 feet deep in an area of 50' x 30'
The thread was deleted lest we offend the Dominican family of one of the largest novelty food providers on the island.

hey when I was over in Europe this past summer I noticed that all the water bottles and the soda bottles that were plastic the tops could not come off so when you opened the bottle the top just stay to the side I thought it was a pretty ingenious idea

Disgusting.
So, in Cab last year I had an alphabet couple downstairs from me. 3 "adopted" dogs. They let them crap in front of the building and swept it into a Dominican dustpan ( you know, with that extended handle). They would leave that on the front porch all day and night. I don't know what country they came from, but I assume somewhere in Europe.
