The shortage of sugar has a political twist to it. The US has had over a year now a halt of imported sugar from the Central Romana Corporation. The US accuses Central Romana of using forced labor. The effect of this has been a reduction of sugar production and its labor. The sugar embargo has had an impact on the supply of sugar for the domestic market. Who really knows how this works or why, but it seems the refined sugar (white) is in limited quantities.

I've been using Equal and Splenda daily for 40 years now. No problems so far. Healthier than if I had been using that poisonous sugar.

Food for thought:

Are sugar substitutes worse for you than sugar?

“Really, both sugar and artificial sweeteners are a problem for your health,” says functional medicine specialist Melissa Young, MD. “But if we're comparing what's worse, artificial sweeteners are far worse than sugar.”Apr 20, 2023

Are artificial sweeteners just as bad as sugar?

Research has shown that consuming artificial sugar may actually be harmful. Side effects of artificial sweeteners may include things like weight gain, poor blood sugar control, and an unhealthy gut. It is best to limit your use of artificial sweeteners when possible, just as with sugar.Jul 20, 2023

Time to kick your "sweet" addiction.

Fact checking my own post, I seem to have that reversed. Brown tends to dissolve faster than white. However, I only ever see them making the homemade juices with white in the streets.
White refined sugar is the sugar of choice for the fruit juices as it imparts a sweetness without imparting the molasses/caramel like flavor that would distort the flavor of the fruit?
Just a guess.

About 25-30 years ago I used to get reports mistakenly sent to me because I have the same last name as a famous doctor at Emory School of Medicine , in Atlanta and we use the same ISP. I ignored most of them.

But one of the reports was about documented cases of observed brain damage, such as brain bleeds, migraines and signs of dementia, and possible higher cancer rates particularly in long haul flight crews, among who consumed diet soda sweetened with Aspartame (methyl ester). This was all before other negative studies began to draw the attention of the Feds.

I never use artificial sweeteners

Aspartame (methyl ester)
Aspartame is phenylalanine and aspartic acid. The compound itself is methylated. A methyl ester is a chemical group, it is not the molecular formula of aspartame. A molecular compound may have various "groups" added on, in this case a methyl group. The methylation of phenylalanine and aspartic acid is the "sweet" component of the molecule

Me neither.
I abhor the aftertaste.
You couldn't pay me to drink a diet soda.

Two words can explain the supposed sugar shortage. Corporate greed. Just like every other shortage in today's world, it is not a shortage but just a way to get the prices higher.

Funny thing in the news TODAY. As we speak, mice have negatively responded to aspartame. Funny, because mice and rats at one time showed us the exhilarating effects of cocaine. I was told those mice were still alive and kickin'!

Aspartame could cause memory and learning deficits in future generations, a new study suggests

I doubt it.
I think any chemical called 'metyl ether of the aspartic acid/phenylalanine dipeptide, with a chemical formula of C14-H18-N2-O5 {numbers should be subscript) can't have a neutral effect on the body.

It is 200 times sweeter than sugar and it was marketed to fat people as a possible way for them to keep downing soft drinks and not feel guilty about their weight.

Coke and Pepsi sold billions of cans with this stuff and Nutrasweet and Equal billions of packets of it to restaurants.

First off it won't help you lose weight, it tastes funky so why keep consuming any thing using Aspartame? People will still use it however because just look at smokers - they prefer to die from inhaling burning leaves wrapped in chemical paper.

I knew some folks many years ago who never gave sweets to their children.
I thought they were nuts at the time, and I'd be amused every time they got some broccoli or a carrot as a reward for behaving or doing something good.
That was the first time in my life that I was exposed to the concept that sweets can be an addiction, and probably the toughest addiction to overcome.

Sweet'n Low has a funky after taste, but I prefer the taste of a diet coke to a regular one. I can't even drink a regular Coke anymore. I average 3 Diet Cokes a day and 3 cups of coffee with Splenda or Equal. Been doing that for well over 40 years. No problem. It's all nothing but hype.

The sugar industry is worried. It's worth close to a hundred billion dollars! This is no different than why big pharma killed off Ivermectin.

Do you have any idea how many chemicals and hormones there are in almost every other food we eat and beverage we drink. Any negative effects from aspartame pale in comparison to all the other crap we're putting in our bodies.

Our life expectancy keeps increasing. That tells me much of the concern is ado about nothing. There are some people who may be hypersensitive to splenda/saccarin/or whatever, but that's a distinct minority.
