Straying again

OMG!!
Springsteen attempted a Clash song?!?! Say it ain't so. Poor Joe Strummer most be turning 45RPM in his grave. I tried to watch some of that show, but was bored to tears by the pace of it, not to mention the bazillion commercial breaks. I used to like The Boss, a lot, but how dare he desecrate Joe's memory.

Se?or Golo,
You make me laugh out loud with your unabashed opinions on music and the artists who attempt it. Indeed, most of your predictions and evaluations are right on the money. As I said, I was first attracted to Gisselle's sexy CD artwork, but I do sincerely like her voice and her choice of songs. I got some Olga CDs too, but a lot of it is pop and ballads. I was looking more for that 'tropical sound' at the moment.

I still can't find any of HB's recommendations: Luis Alberti, Le?a, Sancocho Prieto and something Pedro Juan, but I continue to look. Guess I'll have to wait until I get back to the island to make some purchases. One and a half suitcases for beer, and a half a suitcase for music. Sounds like a good plan.

No, Marc Anthony is NOT your double...

I know Marc Anthony, (Lloyd Bentsen's famous quote goes here)...

Jesus! Dominican and Cuban DR1 regulars bashing Cel?a Cruz? Eso es lo ?ltimo. And some people talked about "respect" on previous posts. Oh, I see, esa vieja prieta doesn't deserve any.

Jes? man?fica, bilgen de la'ltagracia, Mamindie, where's 'Retha when you need her? That's cool, no te apure, alg?n d?a ajolcan blanco...

Boys, there are some things REAL men just don't do:

You can tug on Superman's cape; piss into the wind; and you can even mess around with Jim, but you DON'T diss Celia Cruz.

speaking of the "grammies"

MA made his appearance but didn't get to sing :( . And as for that poor girl who kept winning, somebody give her lessons on stage presence. Very nice voice, though.

edited to add: Joseito, Celia.Scares.Me.

Maine Girl...

Her wig, huh? So, can we deduce that what scares you is her physical appearance?

(Jose?to...rubbing his chin in deep thought in a Jack Handy-esque manner, thinking...'Hmmm, If I could only write half as good as you-know-who. Hmmm...')

Not starting trouble, only questioning a post. 'Nuff said.

All wigs aside, her work on the little-known video "Elmo's Fiesta" is top-notch.

*breaks into song* I wonder if YOU know, in Spanish one is uno, but if you like two, dos is for you...

Ok, Petaka, I hope that the DR1 Repugnicans come to my rescue here. I once called Trent Lott a helmet-head because of that road kill that he wears and they came unglued. If a wig scares the bejesus out of someone, imagine if she was on a wheelchair?

Oh shit, Elton John/Tina Turner/Sam Donaldson/Burt Reynolds/Charlton Heston/Ted Danson, utede se jodieron. Qui?n lo manda a utede a recib? eso recessive genes? Next time, pick better deoxyribonucleic acid, people. Or else, no grrramy or ocare for y?.

CC is a great artist, no doubt. Yes, her physical appearance scares me. So did Aretha's Queen-in-White get-up at the Grammys. But she _is_ the Queen of Soul, so who cares what she wears? Same for Celia. She can do whatever she pleases, she has nothing to prove to anybody.

(least of all little MG )

Jane J., it's a good day when you get to watch Sesame Street :)

Who knew! Puerto Rico!
I just liked their sound....energetic and yep, I have that song. Somewhere........

I briefly met Johnny Ventura here in T.O after one of his shows and I thought he was old then....was really surprised to hear when he was elected Mayor........

But then an actor acted his way into the Whitehouse (oops...just made a funny typo on that one......well, funny if you know German swear words at least-replace W w/an s......).

HN,

Acted his way? Wasn't he Governor of California?
Didn't he lose his attempt to get the nomination
in 1976 and came back to win in 1980 and 1984.
Reagan didn't act his way into office. He was a
leader who made an imprint on the world.

SLM,

I would mix in some bachata along with the merengue,
perhaps Antony Santos?

My main gripe about latin music is that it never seems to develop. Not many people take chances.
The Grammys have nothing to do with talent. It is a corporate popularty contest. The grammys are voted on by the members of the industry. Hence the biggest music corp.(Sony) will win the majority of the awards. Also everybody votes for every catagory. Most of the people who vote for the "best latin" catagories have no clue for who they are voting for. It is just name recognition. Hence Celia Cruz has a room full of Grammys. All one has to do is read a copy of Billboard Magazine in the weeks leading up to the voting and you will see Advertisements touting all types of artists for different catagories.
The Premios Lo Nuestro is just a promotional event for specific artists. In particular the artists who are signed to a record company that "takes Care' of the radio Station that sponsor the Premios Lo Nuestro.
One of the few Latin Music Artists I like is Ricardo Arjona. his Music is above average but his Lyrics are some of the best that I have heard in any language. His Live act is one of the most entertaining I have seen or heard in a long time. He recently had a hit that topped the Billboard Latin Music charts at number 1 for 12 weeks yet he wasn't even nominated for a "Premio Lo Nuestro"! I guess he didn't give a good enough Bribe to the Station.

Some other Grammy thoughts:

No Doubt is a great band. They just need a new singer.(I Know. I want to bang Gwen also but her voice is week live)

Great to see, My Man, Elvis can still rock.

"Miami" Steve Van Zandt should stick with the Sopranos.

Faith Evans had some problems with her voice that night but did you see her? WOW!
I
dislike the format in which they gave out most of the Grammy's before the show to allow more time for the acts.

Can somebody explain to me the whole Kid Rock thing?

Avril Lavigne? Punk? You have to be Kidding.

Joan Rivers said it best. "If you see somebody dressed nice tonight they are a parking attendent!"

Award shows

Aren't they awful?? Anybody else ever try to sit through "the Alma Awards?" They've got to be the absolute worst. One year, about five years ago I watched, because I wanted to hear Jon Secada sing and when he finally did after about two hours, they put him with, I think, Reba McIntyre, a duet, and they had her warble out a few phrases in spanish and I just about chucked a rock through my TV. It was unbearable.

Remeber Woody Allen in Annie Hall on the subject of hollywood 's award shows. "All they do out here is give out awards. Greatest fascist dictator: Adolf Hitler"

Uh oh. I didn't want to turn this political again.

I am mixing it up with bachata, my merengue addiction. It's OK for a break of pace. I think merengue's just, you know, sexier. Well, except for that song about raining coffee.

What scares me is that one day I might just as easily become a fan of Tejano, or Banda, or the absolute worst, Ranchera. Get me my sombrero and my holster, I'm gonna sing. Yo!

FOR GOLO: YOU READ IT HERE FIRST Re: Marc Anthony is my double

golo said:
Except I can't sing that good. I am almost getting tired of him too, but he is by now the greatest salsa singer ever, even better than Hector Lavoe. His selection of musicians is just the best. The music behind this guy just cannot be decribed.
Well, I like Marc Anthony and he is a good singer, but he ain't noooo Hector Lavoe in my book.
And Tony you are so right. How can we possibly start a letter campaign to have Celia Cruz retired? I don't wish anybody like her to die, but I thought she was going to leave us for good. But I am even afraid that if she dies, we will have to put up with homages and post-mortem awards for her until the sun dies 500,000 years from now.
Start that letter campaign if you must, golo, but I have a feelin' you'll die of exhaustion long before Celia does.
But do you think the Steffans (sic) are making money with losers?? TW
No.
