hello All,

I am returning to the DR and Santo Domingo after a couple of years on a Buisness/Pleasure trip in the near future.

As part of the "pleasure" I enjoy playing poker. On numerous trips to SD in the past I have visited many of the Casinos, but don't recall seeing any "Poker rooms" in the casino's.

Any advice about a casino with a serious, well run poker game in the SD area will be greatly appreciated. If possible discuss the typical game type, rake, ante and local customs/rules so I won't be surprised when I sit.

Thanks in advance

I know a guy who runs a game in Costa Rica and he claims I will not find any poker (except Caribbean Stud and the like) in the DR.

If true, I may try to start a club. I've run one before. I just don't know if there would be enough people interested. If you have thoughts, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks for your reply Monaco,

Unless I hear from some of the regulars I will do some personal research in August when I come down.

Did your friend tell you why no games in SD? Maybe a license/payoff problem. I don't think it would be a lack of interest, as poker is more popular worldwide now than ever before. Also, it has been shown to be profitable for both small "clubs" and large casino's and has attracted people who enjoy the action of gambling without bucking the built in "casino edge".

Maybe you could pick your friend's brain a bit more and scout around for potential "players" if you're living in the DR.

As I said before I expect to be in SD in late August, and I would be willing to assist in starting a club or answering any questions you may have. E-mail me.

In the mean time I welcome any info about currently operating games in or around SD.

I cannot really say why no poker room. I was lead to believe that basically no one has tried yet. My friend's in CR has tie-ins to online casinos and that helped them.

It is my thought to try to add a couple tables in an existing casino. Won't know if anyone there is interested until I go around and ask I suppose. Good to know I'll have at least one besides me at the table!

I am a crap shooter, myself. However, in SD the napolitian hotel-under new and more aggresive management- had a table with 8-10 hands. texas hold em, I think. From talking with them in Jan. '03 they we putting a dice table and more rm for cards. In BC they have a table as well. Not sure if they only play baccarat or what. Since they opps! THE HAMACA has also been acquired --Hilton?-- they would probably have something. Check it out.

Thanks for the reply Duhtree,

Good news thanks, I usually stay at the Napolitano and it would be great if they had a game. I never liked their casino too much, but maybe with new management it's better. Hold-em is fine for me.

Where is the game in BC? Is is at the Hamaca? I understand that it is an A-I resort, any problems getting in and playing if you're not staying there? Parking?

Thanks again, any others with info to provide would be appreciated.

Maybe someone from BC can confirm this, if it's a great room/game I may spend some time in BC. Jim?

Anyone can go into the Hamaca. The casino is open to the public. In fact, one can stay there sin comida. But, it is not user friendly for singles.
