Police demoted or transferred after doing their job

After catching a local thief, a local cop was demoted or transferred. Has anyone else ever heard of this? Why?
My guesses;
1. Don't attract attention to crime, because then it will have to be reported.
2. The criminal was related to someone important, and the cop should have looked the other way or let him go.
3. The police were part of it, so they don't want the guy who was caught talking in prison.
4. "Hey don't be working so hard, otherwise all of us police will have to investigate crimes and work just as hard, otherwise you will make us look bad. "
5. If the cop is solving small crimes, he may stumble onto the big stuff going on the in the area that everyone should just ignore and keep their mouths shut.

the one time I saw this happen... the local policeman took a bribe not to arrest a local ladrone, and the problem was he didnt share the bribe money with the police general... demoted and transfered to the barrio of 100 fires in Santiago (which was his worst nightmare)..............

I can understand a local cop being transferred after catching a bad guy. Simply could be to avoid retaliation from the bad guy's family or from the bad guy himself when he comes out the following week.
No new guess other than listed re why he would be demoted.

Could be true especially if the cops don’t take their guns home at night.

From what I've heard , PN transfers are quite common for a variety of reasons but a demotion would be a form of punishment so he/ she obviously screwed up or made a superior nervous.

They do own their own weapons and take them home off duty.
