Political patronage prevails at the National Aquarium?

Investigative journalist Nuria Piera dedicated her most recent report to look into how political patronage has impeded advances at the National Aquarium. Piera recalled that just four days after taking office, then Environment Minister Orlando Jorge Mera visited the facilities and commissioned the new director Wanda Garcia to rescue and transform what he described as “the marine treasure of the Dominican Republic.” In Jorge Mera’s visit on 20 August 2020, he urged the intervention of the technical areas, reproduction laboratories, and/or incubation of species, to provide these with the necessary equipment.

Piera reports that two years later, the National Aquarium is far from improved and is in apparent deterioration. She reported that the only thing new there is nepotism and a bloated payroll.
