What about Santiago? Which are the poorest or most dangerous barrios? Although, I know that "barrio" implies poverty.

Now this is somewhat comic. I was browsing through the Policiia Nacional website looking to see if they had any statistics on crime per neighborhood and everything seemed to work fine - Even though I didn't find what I was looking for - but when I clicked in the 'Transparencia' link I got this:

they say that population growth has to do with education. The more your educated, the less children you have & probably, more educated about birth control too. I think also that some men in the barrios don't use or are reluctant to use condoms or it may have to do with machismo.

Speaking about "Education" BigBird, I think you should have used,"you are educated",not,"your educated".
Secondly, you know "Nada" about Dominicans,or why they have so many children!

Because I do extensive research on the Dominican Republic. I have a degree in a related field from a university. I was researching how the poorer parts of the city are connected directly to crime rates. I have noticed that many poor parts of the city do not have higher crime than the richer parts.

Some real research data....

Reports on crime in Santo Domingo
A report published today, Monday, 28 May, documenting crime rates in the Province of Santo Domingo and National District (city of Santo Domingo) shows Santo Domingo East with the highest levels. So far this year the municipality has reported 25 murders, two femicides, 29 robberies, 16 injuries and 111 people arrested up to 30 April 2012, according to analysis of police press notices by journalist Mairobi Herrera for Listin Diario. In the analysis, the barrios in Greater Santo Domingo with most crimes reported are Los Mina, Sabana Perdida, Arroyo Hondo, Villa Mella, Los Guaricanos, Los Alcarrizos and Herrera. The newspaper reports that there were 69 murders in Greater Santo Domingo, and that 13 of the victims were policemen.

A recent report on the statistics released by the District Attorney of Santo Domingo's Homicides Department says that the most violent places are Los Alcarrizos and Buenos Aires de Herrera, in Santo Domingo West municipality, and El Almirante, Los Mina, Invivienda and La Toronja in Santo Domingo East. The report of the Province of Santo Domingo released by District Attorney Olga Dina Llaverias found that there were 200 murders in the Province so far this year, of which 181 victims were men and 19 women. Of the 19 women, nine were killed in domestic violence.

La mayor?a de personas apresadas por estafa es de origen extranjero, que luego pasan a ser repatriados hacia sus respectivos pa?ses, generalmente de Europa.

from the listin aritcle..

the majority of people arrested for fraud are foreign but will mostly be repatriated to their own countries, generally from Europe.

It is good to remember that we are swimming in the open ocean here..

sharks all around

maybe that is why i like it here !

Dangerous Barrios

What are the poorest barrios in santo domingo?

I lived in the capitol 6 1/2 years and would say that Capatio (not sure of spelling) would take that dubious honor. Many parts along the Ozama River would also not be a place to take the family.
A lot of these places can be ok in the daytime but very dangerous at night.
When I lived in Villa Mella it would be a short cut to pass through Capatio but some taxi drivers refused to even drive through there at nigth.
I have been in both Capatio and along the Ozama as well as other "considered dangerous areas" and have never had a problem. I don't suggest it but if you do just use your street smarts and be aware at all times. Flashy car/jewelry or anything else that brings attention WILL make you a target.
I always buy a Presidente when walking around these areas just to have a weapon if ever needed. (at least that was Part of the reason for the Presidente).

My take on danger barrios of the capitol for what it's worth.

Sorry I answered most dangerous barrios not poorest HOWEVER I suggest the same areas fit both descriptions as poorest usually correlates with most dangerous. Capatio and along the Ozama river (north of the Bosh/Duarte bridge) would also be the poorest in my estimation.

no cops bad lights

The public works .. for some reason.. wants to keep Gomez down to the Malecon as a low light district.. for photos, maybe.. and there are no street cops at night... the main drag of independencia turns into the old East Greenwhich Vilaage... at night.. pot holes, hookers, guys with dubious intent.. I cannot even walk at night down to the theater which is an easy six minute walk.

when i first came i was in the Zona universtaire.. just to the west of Gomez.. one Dutch guy was shot in the leg on Gomez at two AM

since we now have the subway, we ought to merit more police attention.

since .. well.. it is GAZCUE

there is an old Dominican expression.. when something goes wrong.. they say

well, that can happen even in GAZCUE

When I tell Dominicans in Rhode Island when I used to visit,,, that I live here. They immediately salute!

no wait.. i did have two cops supposedly,, in a plain car with no ID

shoot very precisely over my head in an SUV when the driver.. who was too drunk to drive, as was I.. was going down the wrong way on Cervantes at two AM..

so there is police protection in Gazcue, after all
