Jean Luis Rodríguez, the executive director of the Dominican Port Authority (Apordom) is bullish on advances to make the Dominican Republic the Logistics Hub for Latin America and Cruiseship Hub for the Caribbean. He recently announced that the government is working on the Cabo Rojo cruise ship terminal in Pedernales in the southwest, and the Samaná City terminal whose construction starts 21 July 2022.

This will bring the number of cruise ship terminals in the Dominican Republic to six by 2025.

These are:Amber Cove. Puerto Plata. In operation.Taino Bay. Puerto Plata. In operation.Casa de Campo. La Romana. In operation.Sans Souci. Santo Domingo. In operation.Samana City/ Arroyo Barril. Samana. Construction to start July 2022.Cabo Rojo. Pedernales. Allocated to ITM Group.

I haven’t seen as many cruise ships coming/going lately in Taino bay or Amber cove last few weeks. I am curious why.

Cynical me says that it's probably a lot easier to shift vast quantities of certain substances on ships than it is on planes, so if you were in the business of wanting to move tons and tons of a particular thing, you'd probably want to have more shipping. Especially ships with tourists on, which I suspect have lower-key customs inspections when they arrive.

Maybe I'm just being cynical.

Enough fentanyl to kill everyone in North America can fit into one briefcase. Big ships are not needed.

The DR government loves the easy money from cruise ships. Ten dolla, ten dolla, ten dolla, it ad up...
Plus, people come on a cruise, like the DR and return to AI resorts, buy condos etc.
