Before leaving for Guyana to participate in the Guyana Energy Conference and follow up with deals in Guyana, President Luis Abinader signed Decree 76-25 that creates a new entity to prevent corruption in government. The Presidential Committee for Transparency and Anti-Corruption is created to strengthen efforts to reduce fraud in the public administration. The committee will oversee new efforts to provide channels for increased participation of the general public in denouncing corruption in government and a new system to prevent corruption in government.

I hope this isn’t window dressing because Abinader’s intentions here appears to be to a step in the right direction. A strengthening of his resolve to reduce corruption which he has been doing slowly since his first administration. It will never be eliminated but exposing corruption and corrupt officials, will make it much less lucrative.

Eco - we all know this is lame duck symbolism.
He's done nothing to improve, water roads, enforce traffic laws or electricity. Only more grandiose projects that he thinks are avant-garde for 'mass transit'.
Corruption here and elsewhere is how politicians live comfortable lives.
If they brought the guillotine for corrupt politicians I would hold the basket

Fair bit of truth in what you say Chico which is why I think it’s window dressing. No doubt about it, the guillotine would be an effective deterrent. Given the DR fascination with carnage at motor vehicle accidents, you could probably sell tickets to public beheadings in the DR. A Madame Lafarge knitting the DR flag while viewing the beheadings would be required to get the complete effect. 😆

Similar to what Mr Trump and Elon are trying to do
Let's not forget that, to use your words, Mr Trump is firing independent inspectors general at several government agencies, which obviously affects oversight. Let's hope President Abinader does not shy away from government oversight as it sheds light on any corruption that may reflect on him and his administration.

These people campaigned on getting rid of the obstacles to corruption amongst members of their party/coalition and is exactly what they said in their slogans. Getting rid of actual corruption isn't really on the menu, it's just meant to look like that so they'll continue to be voted in. That's what "getting rid of the "come-solos" (the ones who only steal for themselves and don't let us participate in the stealing) meant. You've been looking at one hand while the other hand has been precisely dismantling oversight and the controls to avoid it.

There's already an office, a department, and a section of the judiciary that do this job, it's just easier to avoid real scrutiny/weaponize if you centralize the whole process. The corrupt politicians they sacrifice from their administration or go after from the previous one are ones who got inflated egos, got out of line or spoke out of turn.

Try to look at the state of services and contracts and you'll notice how everything time-sensitive that was organized and timely before now takes having a connection and greasing the wheels again in order to get done. How we're back to "the printer's not working, the system's down, the right official is away but I can call him if....", Try to find where all the supplies and benefits are disappearing to and where the pricing and time-to-completion is on government funded projects.

Absolutely not true and almost blasphemous. Over the last couple of years I have made dozens of posts that barely scratch the surface of all the things that have been done since he took office. The mass transit projects are just a small part of them.
How about the thousands of apartments built for the poor? The thousands of titles (40k) given to others?
Just because nothing happens in your corner of the Universe doesn't mean nothing is being done.

Blasphemous? JD are you now issuing fatwahs?
Where were those apartments built - and what do the 'poor' pay?

Sorry CB, you can go back and look through my previous posts. I'm not going to do the work for you. Maybe you should follow the president on IG or X.

I only do fatwahs in person with beer and cigars in hand.

I applaud mass firings. We all know how bloated and inefficient government is.
Giving government employees pink slips is the only solution.

While separating the wheat from the chafe they may throw some babies out with the bath water. That's an unfortunate consequence of too many people bathing in the tub.

Too often government employees get lazy, complacient and huffy because they think they have 'employment for life'. Kind of like Milton :

Not arguing with your point. Just pointing out that in the end, it was Milton who walked away with the money, ending up in a beach :D - may be even the DR!

Perhaps because they were not acting independent and doing the necessary oversight that they were hired to do? With the huge amount of corruption being uncovered, obviously many people were profiting and not doing the job. I spent my last few years in the military as part of a small team that looked after a maintenance contact with L3. We were constantly auditing and being audited as well.

Or perhaps there is a desire to eliminate that independent oversight. I know from my time in the US Air Force, the Inspector General office was purposely not in the base chain of command, so they could not be pressured or influenced in their duties.

Doesnt sound like there was any oversight going on, little loan independent oversight

I saw a lot of inefficiency and financial waste during my 30 year plus career with the Federal Government Bob and I can’t recall ever seeing an audit of any kind. We would submit our annual budget request and list the reasons for the request. No follow-up audits. The money would flow out the door faster and with very little justification as March 31st. drew closer. We knew if we didn’t spend it, we wouldn’t get the same amount or more the next fiscal year.

The only time we had any sort of audit was by the defence lawyers when we went to court to get reimbursement from polluters for money we spent during the response. They would scrutinize every expenditure. Other than that, anytime a big spill occurred and we had the legislative authority to respond, the government purse was wide open for us with very little scrutiny.
