Media reports reveal construction of the canal that would divert the waters of the Masacre River in Haiti has halted. The canal construction has the support of Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry and Barbecue (Jimmy Cherizier), the infamous gang leader in Haiti. Yet, the construction has been under protest by the Abinader administration since 2021.

In an update, concurrently, President Luis Abinader declared during the Monday, 25 September 2023 press conference that relations between both countries will never be the same after the impasse.

Abinader told the journalists that the Dominican government does not seek or want any type of conflict with Haiti, but that it will act to defend the national interest.

A diplomatic way of setting the tone for future DR-Haitian negotiations. He’s had enough of wasting time, financial, medical, and military resources on the never ending Haitian problems. He controls the border, and can control the water flow, both good cards in his political hand.
After the two previous administrations, it’s nice to see a President concerned about the future of his country and not concerned about lining his own pockets.

He may be but it’s not as blatant as the two previous Presidents. The DR media is well aware of his anti corruption crusade. If they had any dirt on him, it would have surfaced by now, especially with an election so close.

Second term administrations are noted for their corruption. He will get a second term but I can’t see him lining his pockets. He was wealthy before he entered politics and he would want his successor to get elected.

He’s a resort developer and resort development is a major initiative of his so no surprises there. If he benefits from his resort development policies after his presidency, he’s no different from many other former presidents.
Ensuring the policies for tourism are first priority for the country, an area where he has extensive investments, and most wealthy want to be even more wealthy. As far as Leonel goes can you point specifically at his corruption?

ArtIcles in Dominican Today point specifically to his foundation receiving donations from companies he awarded contracts to and his close association with Senator Bautista, known as the most corrupt senator in Latin America. Also articles in the Washington Post and the Globe and Mail. Allegations about party funding coming from corrupt sources. Lots of posts on DR1 during his administration detailing corrupt practices.

Please be careful about making unsupported derogatory allegations. In the DR, people who are defamed in that way can start legal processes against the person making allegations.
What about a poster making many unfounded laughing emoji’s on my posts I meant as serious feedback ? Haha
