Does anyone have recommendations for a private boat tour to see the Whales .
I would prefer not to go on a boat with a lot of other people

Just show up in Samana and tell them what you would like to do. One time we rented a catamaran for about three hours and I think it only cost us about $450, maybe less. If you want to make more firm plans, I can give you a guys contact information.

Wasn't there someone who has a tour boat that is supposed to be good? I can't remember the name, but they are supposedly really careful about following the protocols and not intruding on the animals. It was/is owned by a woman?

Having been on one of these excursions the protocol is simple; one boat spots a whale and all other boats in the neighborhood rush full speed to the scene. They did keep some distance to the whales though, not sure if it was enough or what the minimum is.

I understand not wanting to be on a boat with scads of other people. That said, I would also want to make very sure that all protocols regarding proximity to the animals are observed.
ive no intention of climbing on their back and go for a dive

Regulations are that boats have to stay 50 meters away from adults and 80 meters from groups with calves. In my experience, this has not always been strictly observed. Which is why the only person I'll go out with is Kim Bedell.

Visit a restaurant near the area where you want to depart for a tour. Ask the proprietors or employees, usually they have network of connections of people offering tours.
