Is anybody a participant or has knowledge of a homeschooling group of parents on the North Coast?
I would also like to know if it could interest some parents if a group was created?

Thank you
I would also be interested in the same information.
Thanks.

Homeschooling in the DR

I would also be interested in the same information.
Thanks.

As a long time homeschooling parent, I will tell you that the DR is NOT Homeschooling friendly. If for some reason you decide to put your kids in a private school after homeschooling, they WILL put you through the wringer because to them "home school"=NO SCHOOL. I successfully homeschooled our first from 1st-graduation (he passed the CA High School Proficiency Exam at 14 and continued studies; now @ 17 awaiting answers for universities.)

Our other two have been in a variety of situations: public, private and homeschooling through 3 US states and 2 countries, so I'm very familiar with this topic. We've done everything from structured curricula to unschooling/natural learning to Charlotte Mason to A-Beka to Oak Meadow to Unit Studies. Let me know if I can help, but I live in Juan Dolio so I can't give you names in the North. The majority of homeschoolers down here are religious Missionaries (which we are NOT.)

Ah, thanks. I have not homeschooled before, but I am a teacher, and thought perhaps if there was enough interest from other families in the area people could maybe pool their collective talents and resources.

Looking for a school for my children

The Carol Morgan School (Santo Domingo), founded in 1933, has around 850 students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. All teachers are certified in their field, and many of the faculty are from the U.S. The school is accredited by SACS, sponsored by the U.S. State Department.
Website: Carol Morgan School, Santo Domingo

Hello--
I have been in contact with people at the Carol Morgan School. They require an entrance exam that has to be taken on site and we do not anticipate being there until the end of the summer. Does anyone have any idea what the chances are for them getting in? (They are good students. 9th and 10th grade next year). Are there lower priced alternatives for English language schools of comparable quality? Does anyone on this forum have children in school in Santo Domingo of comparable age? Thank you for any help you can provide.

Try St George, St Michael, New Horizons, St Thomas and Community for Learning - all are extremely well-regarded and not nearly as expensive as CMS.

Any idea where you will be living? That may also play a part in your decision.

Thanks for the help. I will look into these. I am hoping to get a Fulbright. I am in the final stages of review. I would be living in Santo Domingo, and working at the UASD.

Which part of the city is what I meant :) Santo Domingo is quite large so some schools might be too far away. If you're going to be living near the UASD you might want to look into the Dominico-Americano or New Horizons. St George and St Michael are a little further away, in Piantini, which is north of 27 de febrero Avenue, and St Thomas and Community for Learning would be very far indeed, in Arroyo Hondo which is north of JFK Avenue.

I'm not sure what the chance are at those grade levels but I will share my personal experience.....
We moved to the DR (Santo Domingo) last summer, although we visited in April of last year to visit schools and find a place to live. Our first choice was Carol Morgan because we thought our two kids (5 & 7 yrs old) would adjust to the move easier being around other expat kids. This was apperently too late since most schools have their registration periods in Jan-March. We went ahead and paid to have the girls take their entrance exam ($85 each child) and was put on their waiting list but never got in.
We then enrolled our kids in our 2nd choice, St. George, and have to say we are pleased. The tuition is much more acceptable, and the classes are taught mostly in English but there are some classes in Spanish. This has worked out well for us as we personally felt it was important for our kids to learn Spanish as well.

There is a new homeschooling program which is actually an academy where you are the teacher and they are certifyed by the united states they give your child report cards and just as if they were in school run by k12.com for international students they supply everything you need to teach your children at home my kids are in the program here in Miami but here they offer it as a charter school my kids love it I've done it all from schools in Miami, Philadelphia and the Dominican Republic , in Dom. Rep. my kids attended the ABC school until I moved back to the states. I have chosen to do the k12 method because I am not happy with the Florida Curriculum. But if you are looking into teaching your children at home and their education being accepted anywhere try the k12 method. Its great!

Private Schools in Bavaro/Punta Cana

Hello Everyone.

I am wondering if I can get some recent/current information on the private schools in Bavaro/Punta Cana. I have found a few listings through this thread, and elsewhere, however can not find much more than that through the internet.

I'm curious about quality/opinions and approx tuition prices for these (and any other schools in the area that I'm not yet aware of.) As well, simply to get more information than I already have would be great... since I have so little at this point.

We have 3 kids, 7, 10, 13 yrs and although English is helpful, it could be partially or half Spanish taught as well, since they are learning Spanish now. We are looking to move this year, and since we'll be renting at first, location in the Punta Cana/Bavaro area is where we've chosen to start out. As well, since registration likely needs to begin now, I want to find what I can as soon as possible.

Here's what I've found.

CAP CANA HERITAGE SCHOOL
Cap Cana. R. Dominicana
PHONE: 809-548-6621
FAX: 809-688-4767
http://www.heritageschool.edu.do/
Their website has not been updated since they opened, presumably for the 2007/08 school year, and no tuition info that I could find.

CEPCA- COLEGIO PUNTACANA
Carretera Puntacana.
Punta Cana. R. Dominicana
PHONE: 809-959-3382/809-959-3383
FAX: 809-959-3384

EL ARCA DE NO?
Carretera Meli?.
B?varo R. Dominicana
PHONE: 809-552-0806

JARDIN VERDEAv.
Estados Unidos.
B?varo. R. Dominicana.
PHONE: 809-552-1075
FAX: 809-552-1677

Centro Educativo Punta Cana
Across from Punta Cana Airport
operated by Grupo Punta Cana
apparently teaches in both English & Spanish

Punta Cana Educational Centre

This website has absolutely no information on the school, other than for teachers.

Thanks in advance for anything you can offer for information. We're really looking forward to getting the ball rolling on this.

Chirimoya and Cheryl and all others,

I'm a Masters level ESL teacher in the US with independent school experience. I'm interested in an ESL position at the high school level, and would prefer a school where my own kid (6 years) would attend for a year or two. I'd like to know more about the Punta Cana schools in particular.

Thanks in advance.

Puerto Plata schools information

Hi everyone -
I am assisting a family in P.P. and the eldest son ( who is 10 yrs old) goes to ERCILIA PEPIN - does anyone have any info. on the school, or perhaps advise as to a better one to which I could move him?
Also, I am going over again in August - is it possible to pay a full year's tuition in advance? This would save on regular transfer fees.

Many thanks

Does anyone have the correct contact information and/or website for the International School of Santo Domingo? All of the posted websites do not work.
Thank you! :)
