Pro-statehood candidate to be new governor of Puerto Rico

Puerto Ricans voted in favor of pro-statehood candidate Jenniffer Gonzalez Colon of the currently ruling New Progressive Party in the 5 November 2024 poll. She is the Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico. She had assumed office on 3 January 2017 for a term that ends on 3 January 2025.

The position of Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico is a non-voting member of the United States House of Representatives.

According to her US House biography, Gonzalez-Colon is a “lifelong Republican and activist for Puerto Rican statehood.” She was previously the chairwoman of the Republican Party of Puerto Rico.

She will replace incumbent New Progressive Party Governor Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia. He had run for re-election to a second term in office, but lost the PNP primary to Gonzalez Colon.

Statehood isn't easy no matter what Puerto Ricans want.
Statehood has to be approved by Congress and signed by the president.
No small feat. I don't see it happening soon
