Shipped a 65 lb package. (by boat)
Package cost $400.
I was charged (apart from the shipping charge) $254. in Taxes.
That's 54% Tax.
CPS claimed there is nothing they could do about it.

What I should have done is get a Quote beforehand.
That is what I will do in the future.

CPS got really really really bad in the last year or so.
They became extremely slow. Rumors are that they ship 1/2 of their Parcels by Sea but do charge their Costumers "next day" Air !?
I did the math; it's arround 85K aditional profit per container. A container from miami incl. release is 7-9 days.

CPS was pretty anal the one time I wanted a quote from them. I told them what I was shipping, how much it cost, what it weighed, and how big the box would be. Not good enough for them. They wanted me to submit it in writing. There are much better couriers than CPS.

Those taxes are assigned from Aduana. Nothing to do with any of the shipping companies. Anything over USD$200 is subject to taxes.

I understand that........I was prepared to pay 18%......but 54%???..I feel that CPS as my agent should not accept that. But they absolved themselves completely.

"Package cost..." was for the freight costs only, right? But contents is taxed on the value of of the item...which is determined by aduana I think.

DOMEX is good, but they won't deliver to Cabarete or Sosua - passports, yes, but not regular packages from, say, Amazon or eBay.

BMCargo charges about $5 per pound, but over a certain weight, I think 20 lbs, it goes down to about $3 per pound, package size factors in too; but the tax is standard for items over $200, I found that out the hard way also.

The tax rate that aduanas charges varies depending on what it is. I think tv's are in the 50% bracket(?).

These were chaise lounges for the pool.
Someone high-up and well connected probably has a monopoly on chaise lounges and they're paying aduanas to charge a high tax rate to keep anyone from trying to get in and undercut them.

Every category of item has a different percentage. Some are low and some are high. CPS or your next shipping company can provide you a sheet from Aduana showing the categories with the tax percentage. 18% is the bare minimum unless it's something related to education such as a laptop.
