Tourism Minister was in Brazil as part of a promotional South American tour.

He reiterated that Brazil is an “extremely important” market for Dominican tourism. Brazil travel has grown in leaps and bounds as more airlines are competing for Dominican and Brazilian travelers in 2023 and 2024.

Tourism minister David Collado discussed ongoing efforts to collaborate with new hotel chains and develop new destinations to further strengthen Dominican tourism, achievements made possible by the work of travel agents and tour operators.

“Our commitment is clear: at every event, we strengthen the presence of the Dominican Republic on the global stage, building the future of our country’s tourism together,” said David Collado, the Minister of Tourism of the Dominican Republic, during a tourism promotion roadshow in São Paulo, Brazil.

Still persist goverment only selling sun and beach everywhere, recently I had friends from Sao Paulo visiting they landed in Punta Cana 4:00 am wait until 8:00 am to rent a car and drive to Santo Domingo to spend 2 nights there, they liked and told me that in Brazil all the promotion is for all inclusive, they do not heard too much about Santo Domingo and other destinations.

The only thing the DR government cares about is AI resorts and Cruise Ships. Do you know why? That is where the vast amounts of revenue are.
Not a few thousand snowbirds going to Cabarete or expats living in condos in Punta Cana, LT and Sosua that just clog up the roads and overtax the already frail water and power supplies.

That is why other places are not advertised.

I feel that promoting beaches in Brazil is like shining a torch onto the Sun.

They have got great beaches too. And a lot more to attract tourists.

They do, but not as many all inclusive resorts. Vacationing in Punta Cana will become a social class marker. Some of Brazil’s most popular beaches are in urban areas while the DR’s most popular beaches with tourists generally aren’t and don’t have a background of highrises spanning the entire length of the beach.

Urban tourism is not nor will it ever be a big thing in the DR. A drop in the bucket, one pee in the ocean, compared to either Cruise Ship or AI resort revenue.

I agree on some but not all points. The urban beaches are popular because they are easy to get to for the rich and the poor alike. Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro gets busy on weekends as families simply need to grab their beach towels, optionally back some food and then hop on the bus or Metro to Copa.

Their really nice beaches are away from urban areas and they are popular with the Brazilian middle-class and the rich. I do agree they don't have AIs.

Of course I would love it if Punta Cana becomes a hit (but only Punta Cana because otherwise @windeguy would object :D) because :
  • Good for DR economy as the Brazilian market is valuable
  • More flights between DR and Brazil
  • More Brazilians in the beaches of DR
  • May be there will be more Brazilian food available (like Brasero in Playa Dorada, POP)
