Tourists vacationing in Punta Cana over the 17-19 November 2023 weekend were spared from the long-lasting rains and the bad weather of the past weekend.

This is a large island. For the most part, tourists in the Punta Cana area were unaware there was a storm passing through the Dominican Republic. People living and staying in the area went about their normal activities.

MikeFisher, who covers bad weather storms for DR1, reports on how practically nothing weatherwise was happening in Punta Cana in the DR1 Weather blog.

Most of the damage was in the larger metropolitan areas where the intense construction has affected the drainage of the rain waters. Areas close to rivers and gullies were also affected by flash floods and mudslides.

It is just a matter of time before a CAT5 storm hits Punta Cana. Maybe next year,

That is frequently true and unfortunate for PR, but it is just a matter of time before a big hurricane sneaks in under Puerto Rico and then pops up into Punta Cana. The east and south of the DR have the most vulnerability to being hit by hurricanes.

Nope . It is almost inevitable one will. Simply pointing that out.
The Caribbean hurricane season lasts from June 1 to November 30. August and September usually experience the most hurricanes, however, Punta Cana is rarely hit. In the last 100 years only 13 hurricanes have hit the Dominican Republic and of those, only two have been in the Punta Cana and Bavaro areas.

I guess if you live another Hundred Years you might come close.............

I have lived here in the east since 2005. I have travelled literally every road and back road in the region. Never have I seen a bar called 4 Roses. That article is not showing photos of Punta Cana. And if it actually was, the roof looks pretty darned good for having gone through a hurricane. As Sky mentioned, it did not amount to much.

I had to look it up. There is a Four Roses nightclub in San Juan, Trinidad.

You missed a big one by a year................Hurricane Jeanne (Cat 3) in 2004.

First hand experience on this one.

The east was completely cutoff in this one when the bridge over the Chavon River was destroyed.

Lots and lots of flooding in the low lying areas around Bavaro. Palm trees down everywhere......some blocking roads completely.

Grocery stores (In those days there were no real super mercados in the area without driving to Higuey) without food......

Gasoline being sold for crazy prices in Presidente bottles on the side of the road as no power to pump at gas stations and then no way for fresh supplies to get to the east.

Tinacos literally rolling down the fairways at Palma Real during the storm.

Several people died trying to cross the Chavon river by small boat......swift moving current and no life jackets.......coupled with an inability to swim were the culprits. Expresso Bavaro ran to the river on one side and then passengers walked down and took a small boat to the other side where motoconchos were waiting for the ride up the hill to another bus............all this in horrendous rain and mud.

I was able to get out by chartering a small plane from an Austrian guy who ran a flight school out of an office at Plaza Brisas.

It may not happen often there..............but when it does..........

Respectfully,

There's (was) a Four Roses Bar in Sosua. I'm pretty sure the picture in the article was taken in Sosua
