Minister of Public Health Victor Atallah continues on his crusade to improve nutrition as part of the new preventive health programs underway since he was named to the position in January 2024. He is taking all speaking opportunities to present the advances in public health and the concerns for an increase in obesity, particularly in children.

Dr. Atallah, a functional medicine practitioner, underscores the government’s commitment to transforming the nation’s dietary habits, preventing diseases, and enhancing the overall well-being of Dominicans. As part of these efforts, the Ministry has commissioned 18 research studies on dietary behaviors and health across various population segments.

No surprise about this

Has anyone walked the cereal aisle lately and checked the sugar content for the various brands? I can almost taste the diabetes -
Processed foods. Stay away. Cheerios aren't bad.

Banning the sugary drinks in schools was a start...the proposed tax on those drinks was an interesting thought too. I agree on the cereals too, I like plain cornflakes now, but I do have fond memories of pouring myself a bowl of Captain Crunch as a kid and watching Saturday morning cartoons :)

No need to wait for the Government. There are already a lot of Colegios that do not allow the kids to bring any unhealthy food. All Lunch Bags are checked by the "FOOD POLICE" and everything prohibited is not returned but thrown away into the garbage (where it's belong to) in front of the child. I love it !

You are free to send your kids wherever you wish to with a backpack loaded with Frito Lay and Classic Coke. Just make sure YOU PAY for their private Health Insurance and don't bother us taxpayer later on with the costs of their Diabetes and future Heart attacks.

Not sure I agree with this, but as long as the parents were well-informed of what is not acceptable, okay. And, I would hope the teachers and other staff have their lunches inspected too!
