Nothing personal Lee but if you had applied back in January when you first posted, you'd have your passport by now... Ringo posted a number. Give him them call, I'm sure they'll be able to answer all your questions.

Passport does not expire until 2013 so I was asking these questions way ahead of time to prepare. I can not apply until after it expires.

I doubt you need an appointment in Puerto Plata. I think you bring your passport there, fill out some forms and pay the fee. Then when passport ready, you go back and pick it up. The fact your address is in SD should make no difference.

Email the Puerto Plata office:

You do not have to wait for the expiration to renew your passport. In fact you are encouraged to renew it with several months to expiration.

A lot of Countries will not admit anyone with less than six months left on their passport.

Thank you. This is very good to know. Right now I am out of the D.R. taking care of my elderly parents, but I need to return to the D.R. to get my permanent residency renewed near the beginning of next year also. Since I have permanent residency in the D.R. they should allow me to re-enter if I have less than one month left on the passport of the country I am citizen of. I can always get my passport renewed in the D.R. and I do not care if it takes longer because I will not have to leave the D.R. during the time it takes to get it renewed.

I would advise against being so casual about the time required to renew your passport. One never knows when there will be an emergency, either for you or for some loved one outside the DR, that may make it necessary to travel on short notice.

It is safer for me to get my passport renewed before I go to the D.R. Thanks again Ken for the suggestion. You are a real help to the people on this forum.
