Porfi,-the guy (OR) has been at it for a long time, it is part of his life-long hyperbolic rhetoric. But he was caught in a bluff this time, and now he has to "clarify". That kind of talk helps alienate the US, not help it gain more in friendship from other nations. Pure pooh-pooh on his part.

And yesterday

Howard Wiarda-one of the people who has written most about the DR in academic circles-told his audience at the FUNGOLDE--Fern?ndez' little toy for when he is not in office, (Gee! I wonder how he funded it????), anyway he told the audience that the DR and the US were totally tied together, no matter what.

He pointed out that Ch?vez has oil to play with but the DR, with no oil to speak of, does have millions of people in the US and the entire East Coast of the US has economic ties with the DR. Plus the $2-3 billion in remittances.

No matter what Reich says or said, this is a fact of life here.

However, my vote goes to the AXIS OF RUM! The four major Caribbean isles, plus Barbados and Trinidad (at least!!)-nationalize all rum production and limit exports to "unfriendly " nations...

Sure, the heavy handed politics of the 60s and 70s are still alive and well in the minds of a lot of politicians, but the fact remains that 94%-95% of all Dominicans are okay with the US. Many with some reservations, sure. After all, many of them were directly affected by the invasion of '65....or by the Army, Police or Secret Service during the first two or three terms of Balaguer-considered by many to have been placed thee by the US--as Bernardo Vega says in his latest book..

HB :p Stirring the pot

Well...

Mr Reich doesnt have much influence, and doesnt express the views of Washington.

And no, the US didnt go to war for oil. Thats such a pre-packaged, simplistic argument. You all wish it was that simple :)

Ninja, please...

Do your research on the past 25 years in the Middle East. Read things other than media reports. Get back to me next year when you are done.

You will come back with a basic true premis: The war in Iraq is about Al-Qaeda. You cannot reach this premis without understanding what Al-Qaeda hoped to accomplish with the Sept. 11 attack, which is the mobilization of Islamic forces to rise worldwide. Likewise, the US invasion of Iraq has nothing to do with oil or democratizing Iraq, but rather creating a base of operations in Iraq and putting an incredible amount of pressure on Saudi Arabia, Iran and Syria to eradicate Jihadist elements.

In my opinion (and others) this is a defensible argument, not publicised by the current US administration (which is a mistake) for the invasion. The "oil grab" argument is quite elementary. Do you think this whole scenario was devised for Halliburton?

I must congratulate Falcon, as he and his small elite circle of friends are the only people in the World that know the ?REAL? reason for this war.

What?

The DR doesn't pose as a threat?

What about all the generals, their staffs, and the well trained, armed, and outfitted military machine? Sounds mighty to me (especially the young military man guarding the dam outside of Santiago-forgive me for forgetting it's name-who begged me for food because he was left there with none...).

Besides, when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like nails...*

*This post made with tongue firmly planted in cheek... ;)

Reich may have backtracked on his statements and made them for a particular audience, but that doesn't mean they're untypical for the US approach to the region. Didn't Congress just pass a law to initiate a broadcasting station to counter Chavez's Latin American Telesur project with 'objective information' (read counterpropaganda)? Is the DR among the countries receiving Telesur?
About the remark on left-of-center leaders and double standards, Bush's great buddy Tony Blair is still leader of a party that is full part of the Socialist International....

Let me guess which parts of South Africa those are?

People who didn't know you better might find you anglo-centric and racist.

Two wrongs make a right, Criss? At least Chavez and Reich are regional issues with certainly more than a tangental impact on the DR. You, on the other hand, want to talk about how great and free America is and Zimbabwe isn't? Glad to see you holding the US up to such high standards.

Sorry, but I think it's a pathetic, knee-jerk, frustrated reaction that does nothing to put this thread - with a subject that was interesting and extremely DR-related - back on track.

Hahaha, if the US took every ounce of oil that can come out of the ground for the next 20 years and sold it at twice the price it would have lost money on Iraq.

Don't let fact bother you and change your mind that it was all about the oil so you can put the US into a little corner and say "BIG BAD BOY".

The small Elite circle must be only people who can think because anyone that says it is all about the oil CANNOT!

Moving on ...

Scott, you're replying to a message from May. This whole Iraq thing does seem to have started touching on the nerves of Americans. It shouldn't. We all know that the war had perfectly clear justifications and has been a smashing success in bringing democracy and stability to the Middle East while building good will for America around the globe.

And anyone who says otherwise is itching for a fight!

That said, and getting back on track, isn't it quite likely that Chavez can continue to challenge US hegemony in the region only because the US is occupied by the Iraq war. While the cat's away, the mice shall play, so to speak. Were Bush's hands not occupied, wouldn't he be coming down on Chavez hard or, at the very least, coming down on Fernandez hard before the DR had the chance to enter Petrocaribe?
