Thanks for the picture John Evans. That is excatly what is here on our estate. I will do some research on "galliwasp", it has been over a year that I have been trying to explain to locals what this is and have come up empty handed. We also have one of those endangered, endemic ground hog looking things living here in a tree stump/ hole. Only comes out at night and I have yet to catch a good look at him/her.

here is the creature i was talking about - sorry the pic may be very large its a hispaniolan smooth galliwasp - there is also a stripped galliwasp which is darker in colour

There are no poisonous snakes luckily in Hispaniola. You migh find some usefull information coming from U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine: Staying Healthy Guide - Hispaniola island.
And below is a photo of tarantula hunting which we witnessed recently in grass in mountains right behind the Cabarete Village, enjoy:
