Years ago I tried using my expired cedula to get money from western union. They refused. I had to go home and get my passport. (note-it was not my fault my residency was expired. I had to do tons of medical stuff they wanted, blood work, analysis and other stuff, and had to wait for money to get it done. I did not have to pay late fees even though renewal was 5 months late.)
I had the same problem a while back trying to change dollars at CaribeExpress. The cedula was expired due to a delay in my appointment at DGM. I think you'll have a problem renewing your DR drivers license with an expired cedula(?). Once my bank warned me my cedula was about to expire.

Yes absolutely you can't renew a DR drivers license with a expired cédula. I didn't use my DR license since. Only my now up-to-date Danish/EU one for renting a car here. I expect to renew my DR drivers license after I have renewed my residency and cédula.

I don't think your residency expires as such. If you don't renew on time, they charge you a fine for not renewing on time (which is quite a lot of money). If you want to rescind your residency there will be a process for that but unless you go through with that you have to either renew on time, or pay the fine. That's how it worked with my residency in any case, I couldn't renew because of the pandemic and when I did I got a big fine.

Me too. Just the other day paid online a whopping RD 72,000 on the DGM platform. It expired June 2021. But now I certainly expect to get it. Now I don't now if my new residency will be until 2031 or 2035. I applied for the 10 years permanent.

I was a year past due on my last temporary residency renewal, and I feel I ended up paying about the same amount of money all in all. The "fine" is 700 pesos per month past due, if I recall correctly, pretty close to the annual amount so consider that a wash. And I didn't pay the repatriation insurance for that year too, so that was a win! I think I paid more for the cedula too, but not a grand amount.

why bother, I just pay the overstay fee, in the future if I do not have this option, Colombia is waiting
Colombia is nice for va long weekend but do you really fall for this guys (or gals) smiling and a.. kissing 24/7. Colombians are the most fake people on earth.
The DR has it fair share of a'holes as well but at least people here are real.

So I received my Recidencia Definitiva and new cedula. It wasn't bad at all. I was there less than 3 hours at the DGM and then for the new cedula it was quick. It is the 10 years and from date issued. So until 2035. That feelt like a bonus. Normally the renewal is four years and you sort of know what will be going on then and you already think about next time you have to renew lol. But 10 years. Actually I am not moving back to the DR now but it is nice to have the option. There are now a few practical things I need it for. Was just in the bank and a little easier to get a new debit card at Banco Popular for instance. I did most of the work myself uploading the required documents and my partner helped with a couple of the documents.

I think the main two advantages are being able to get a licence and drive legally, and being able to open a bank account (my friend has tried a couple of banks with the expired tourist visa in his passport, and no success).

Congrats! In what location did you renew your cedula?

It was a bit exhausting the two days I went to DGM for the recidency and to JCE to get my cédula printed out. Then I had some errands I needed to do with my new updated documents. The title of the thread that they want to make it easier for some I fully support. If someone has invested a lot I think it should be rewarded with an easier process and maybe directly to the Residencia Definitiva. As it is now it is actually the same hassle for everybody. I would be interested in other posters view.

I just made some changes to the statutes of my company with my Dominican partner and updating it at the registro mercantil. It was good to have my updated personal documents here for that too.

Other than the initial medical exam and drug test, you can renew your temporary residency for as many years as you want but, as soon as you apply for permanent residency, your obligated to take a new medical exam and drug test. Then, you have to renew your "permanent" residency after ONE year and even then your "permanent" residency is good temporarily for 4 years. Totally insane program.

It is. It has been progressively exhausting and that is why I kept postponing this time and because I am living in Denmark. I got a desire to come back here more and that was the motivating factor. At the end they waived the medical and the guarantee thing. My partner was calling them about it. I am glad they rewarded me this way and getting it until 2035. I have had it since 2007 I think it was.

I'll be a 10 year temporary resident this year. If there's any way they'll let me slide and go direct to definitive residency like you have, I'll do it.

It was in 2007 I think I got the temporary and in 2008 or 2009 the permanent the first time. First using a lawyer. I did it last time in 2017 the permanent yes so must have done it in 2013. So I had the permanent residency which renews every 4 years for a long time. So it expired in June 2021 and was to exhausted to renew then as I had some other things to deal with. So actually now in 2026 it is almost 9 years ago since last time I renewed in June 2017. So I was really happy getting it until 2035. I didn't expect that. It feels like a home run at the DGM.
