Are there any law firms in the Sosua/Cabarete area that process the paperwork to obtain a Cedula based on retirement income for people who are already in the Dominican Republic? Any help; would really be appreciated. Falkland in Villa Magante

The process starts in your home country with a residency visa in your passport from the local Dominican embassy. This must be done by you in person out of the DR.

Then you can use a lawyer to help complete the process after you are back in the DR if you wish. Do you realize this much to begin with?

If your question is can some lawyer do this without doing it correctly while you are in the DR already without that residency visa from back home, they cannot. That would be illegal. So nobody can "know" such a lawyer.

Sorry, please change the phrase above from "That would not be illegal" , to "That would be illegal". The residency process does not start in the DR.

Have been advised by an immigration attorney in Santo Domingo and confirmed this here in the UK, that the Embassy in London, no longer does this work and that it is now done in Paris for the UK. Difficult, but it can all be done by mail. The law firm I contacted in Santo Domingo can facilitate the paperwork with the embassy in Paris.

If that's the case, the embassy in the UK hasn't updated their site yet. Make sure you're not getting scammed. You wouldn't be the first:

You do not have to appear in person. Only provide documents with apostilles as required to the Dominican consulates 'nearest' your hone address

I would recommend Guzman Ariza. I used them and was completely satisfied. They have an office in Sosua. They advertise on this site and monitor the Legal thread. You can contact them thru their web site and ask what's required. They have a free consultation and send you straight on what's required.

But I think that you will need that residence visa given by your home country DR. consulate. You will also need documents from your home country like Birth certificate and police report. I would in your case contact Guzman Ariza they maybe able to help you acquire the documents needed from your home country. If Guzman Ariza tells you that you must return in person to your home country I would not trust an other law firm telling you different.

Please Keep us inform if you can manage residency without returning to your home country.

A residency based on an irregular visa? That sounds like a real crap shoot to me. Too many posters here complaining about how long it took to get residency the regular way or, in some cases, not getting it at all,. "You roll the dice, you take your chances".

BTW the subject matter is "retirement visa". I have no interest in the Abreu Law firm nor interest in degrading by innuendo. Only comments in the news article regarding this type of visa. Maybe an "expert" on visas, there are a couple on board would have something worthwhile to say?

AlaPlaya we are in 100% agreement on that.

Since there is a place the OP can get a residency visa near their home country, that will be the option for them. And then enter the DR and complete the process.
