Revision of Staying Extension

The staying extension has been revised to include be more aligned to actual DR laws.
Here are the new requirements which included a return ticket, solvency proof and medical exam requirement to
be granted the extension for up to 120 days:

REQUIREMENTS​

• Copy of the passport page where the biometric data is.
• Stamp of the date of the last entry to the country.
• Return boarding pass.
• Own Economic Solvency.
• Medical Certificate.

PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW​

1- The user makes the extension request through the web portal and uploads the required documents.
2- The responsible staff receives the application online and debug the documents supplied by the user.
3- The request for extension of stay by the corresponding staff is approved.
4- An email is sent to the user informing about the status of their request.
5- The user makes the payment of stay online or at the airport.

I had wondered when the return ticket would finally come into play. It has always been required of airlines to ask non-residents for one.

Does this mean that airlines will finally be required (and also forced) to ask?
What will happen now if you over stay that already provided return ticket?

Time will tell on those thing, but for an extension you now need a return ticket to get the extension.
Economic solvency and a medical certificate were part of the extension previously, but went away.
Now they are both back along with that return ticket.

I think it's just so they don't get stuck with the bill if you have to be deported or denied entry into the country.

Why apply for an extension and jump through hoops? Just pay when you leave like thousands do and return when you like...
And the driving myth is exactly that, a myth. No one in the 20 plus years of DR1 has EVER encountered it...................

It's just a question of 'legality'..... being in the country legally.

Driving is usually the cited example but there are others.... illegality offers no individual rights

Can you even apply for an extension before you actually arrive in the country? If not, what tourist brings satisfactory proof of solvency with them. What specifically constitutes proof of solvency in the eyes of DGM? Same for the medical. What tourist is going to be keen to find a DR doctor and pay for a medical certificate or see a doctor before coming here then running around to get that document translated into Spanish either here or back home before coming? Sounds like a 120 day tourist visa that should be available from the embassies and consulates around the world. Something to get before you arrive.

No, they did not ask before for a return ticket in the old application. This is the first time it has been asked for.

They did previously ask for economic solvency and a medical, but that was removed and now they put those two things back.

"They" don't necessarily get stuck with the bill. The airline who does not ask for a return ticket is stuck with the bill if the DR government catches that airline and enforces the law.

And In the case of how does someone doing the previously recommended "buy and cancel" a fully refundable ticket to temporarily have a return ticket avoid the DR government getting stuck with the deportation costs?

Both situations mean laws would actually be enforced.

When the requirements previously included solvency and a medical exam, the same questions were asked.
The answer is, Almost nobody would do this. The immediately previous easier way to get an extension, however, was rather far outside DR laws.
This method at least tries to comply with the laws.

A nice 180 day maximum snowbird visa was, is and will be a better idea. But they cannot seem to come up with that.
Along with if you violate that snowbird visa, you don't just pay a fine, but don't get back in again.
But, they just don't seem to be able to think simply on this.

You are right, to this date you just stay and pay the fine. NO ramifications at all besides being illegal.
That, of course, will never change. Until it does.

For last 3 yrs for extension they asked for return ticket ..then last yr added medical and proof of solvency.. one step forward two back..

No you can’t apply before you arrive no proof of stamp in passport… for solvency just take a picture of your stack of money..

I would say it is to comply with the law. Cancelling a fully refundable return ticket still is a loophole that can be used.
It is still very easy to live here forever and ever and never pay.

If you ever leave, they have, or at least had, an infinitely long schedule to calculate the fine upon exiting.

The only way around that is to leave via sneaking out through the porous border to Haiti(kidnap charges might be higher) , take a Yola out or die while in the DR as examples of said non-payment of overstay fines.

No because your limited to 120 days max anyways..

Most people can use the internet to access a copy of their bank statement...not hard to obtain proof of solvency.

Windy I did it myself during the pandemic, I applied for the extension in November 2020 and they 100% definitely asked for the return ticket. I had to book a flight specially to get the return ticket, that's how I remember.
