russia is not a part of european union, schengen agreement or euro zone. some would even argue whether it is a part of europe at all, seeing that most of the country is, actually, in asia. therefore russians have no rights or permits to work freely anywhere in europe without proper visas and documents. they cannot even travel to USA/canada/parts of europe without visas, let alone legally work there.

so here's a part of your answer: russians do not work in the western countries because they cannot. and those who can - that is have visas and money for travelling - do not really need to. they are doing well enough without subjecting themselves to various regulations of foreign governments.

second thing, like all ex-communist countries russia's social system is failing and not up to par with the modern world. so russians naturally no not trust any government to provide them with anything in their old years.

lastly, russians in DR did not come here to warm their old lizard armpits in the rays of dominican sunshine, living off pensions and benefits. those i know are fairly young, they work, have their own businesses, speak few languages and find themselves very much at home here. they come from a country where, not so long ago, you could spend 20 years in prison for a political joke. now they live in a place where on zeta 101 you can hear politicians being called comemierda.

....Maybe because all the people have different priorities in their lives and not everybody want to work hard for 30-40 years and actually start enjoying their lives only after 50? What is the point...
I LOVE IT, THINK THE SAME WAY~!

I like DR because of the climate and because I want to leave near the ocean right now, not when I'm 60 sitting quite in the shadows and thinking "God bless this day, cause it looks like I don't have the pains in all parts of my body today" .
I ALWAYS SAID THIS MYSELF, WHY WAIT AND "TRY" TO DO WHAT YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO DO AND MOST LIKELY NOT BEING ABLE TO PHYSICALY DO IT.
You seem to be thinking the same way i do.
I think it better to enjoy our life the fullest before it's too late.
Who knows where i'll be tomorrow, next week, in a year...
That's exactly why i'm moving to the RD next month, can't wait ;)

60 is the new 40.

Wow, that means that most Russians will be enjoying themselves for a very long time, while most Americans will be working 20 years longer until they feel 60 which means they would be 80 yo.

I guess that explains why there are so many Americans baby boomers hanging up their straw hats and their Mexican sombreros to re-join the rat race again.

1.) I am from Canada, and i have t say it's not true about this, well, it is kinda but the joke is that when you reach 60 or 65, after only 10yrs of work, you might get a 175$ a month pension.

2.) i'm sure it was true about that, in those years, not anymore.

That also my opinion,

1. There's a minumum retirement check that people recieve after working and paying taxes for 10 years in the U.S, Canada, and Northern Europe. In the U.S it's significantly more than $175; in Canada, however, it's probably even more than the U.S. In Northern Europe, where i work, it's around $1000 a month as a bare "Minumum". After all, you need to survive. Remember, i'm talking about a retirement check here...not a Welfare check or food stamps.

2. It's very simple...if you work ten years, and pay taxes for those ten years, you get a retirement check at the age of 65 (62 if you're willing to take a discount in the U.S.) A few Dominican aunts and uncles of mine recieve it, a few Dominican cousins recieve it, It's very straight forward. It's not rocket science. You work, you pay taxes into a system, you retire, you get a monthly paycheck. If you're smart, you take the paycheck to a third world country where it goes much farther then back home.

Anyone who thinks its smart to stay in the DR and work for someone else--paying no taxes whatsoever into a Dominican system that will not help you one tiny bit if something should happen to you or your children, should re-think their decision, and re-think their logic.

I undertsand if you're young, you're healthy, you think you're invincible, and you think that nothing bad will happen to you or your children becuase, as of yet, nothing negative has befallen you or them. However, you need to rethink your situation. If you have the opportunity to work in the U.S, Canada, or Northern Europe, then by all means, take advantage of it while you can. It won't last forever.

If, however, your some financial investor or entrepreuner--as some people here have stated--well then, of course, i understand your situation and good luck to you! You're probably making enough money in the DR where the risks of living here--and not paying into any system--outweighs any Western social system advantanges.

Again, i'm speciafically addressing Russians, Domincans, and any other non-western industrialized citizen, who has the opportunity to work in either North America or Northern Europe, but has chosen not to because of some lack of trust in the government, heresay, misinformation, or brain fart.

If, however, you're like me, unfortunate enough to be working here above the Artic Circle trapping Beavers and other furs for a living, but fortunate enough to be paying into a good system, then i sympathize with you, but don't despair, one day, our retirment check will roll in, and we'll be covered in Beaver pelts and enjoying ourselves in the sun, on the beach, in the DR sipping Pina Colodas out of fresh coconuts and pineapples...wrapped in Beaver and chewing on Viagra.

You need to take in to account the difference in mentality as well. Typical Russian relies more on himself than on government (by the way this is more common with people who know how to make money).

Lesia out of curiosity how old are you? And how do you support yourself?

I am late 40?s, and have been paying the maximum SS withholding for at least the last 10 years (at a certain income they stop withholding money, since this is supposed to be kind-of a forced retirement plan, and not a ?tax?), and recently I have been planning my escape to start at 55. In checking my forecasted SS benefits starting in my mid-60?s (which will be 7 more years of max withholding, which I would think would be close to the maximum amount anyone could collect, unless I am missing something), and it looks like I will get a ?haul? of like $24k a year.

Not exactly ?living like a king? dough.

To do well in the US you need to have brains, good education, good work ethics, and actually work hard. To do well in corrupted environments you need to shmooze around, have rich and influential "friends" and "uncles." That is why I love it here in the US - I don't give bribes or have to try to "please" anyone. I can just do honest work, be myself and what I feel is the right thing for me to do.
