I also think about what can be done to help las terrenas get better fire safety.
I heard there were no fire extinguishers. And the only fire truck in town is broken.

Looks like a cool, quaint little town. Terribly sad that these these properties are now burned down.
So many people have now lost their livelihood.

Best wishes.

I had arrived in Las Terrenas over the weekend, and had just checked out FV for the first time Sunday night -- the night before the fire. Was planning on hitting a few bars, clubs, and even the club there (Gaia). I was so surprised to hear the news, I didn't hear any fire trucks or sirens. That's probably something the town should look into.

The same happened here several years ago in Cabrera so a few of us "gringos" got together, bought a new fire truck in the US and had it shipped here. Now we have a new fire truck (that works) AND a new ambulance! Times of tragedy are times to come together to prevent it in the future. I hope LT does the same!!

Crystal Ball

(...) the Ministry of Tourism seems to have wished it all gone (...)

Sometimes wishes come true... ;)

I consulted my CB (crystal ball).... It says:

- The "authorities" will quickly determine that a short circuit or a leaking gas tank caused the fire, alas an "accident". ;)
- The huts will not be rebuilt, Sorry, 60m zone... :cross-eye
- Not everybody in Las Terrenas is so sad that the fishermen's village is gone. :classic:
- Somebody near there now has a much better view of the ocean. :)
- A new (another) donated fire truck would be nice. :bunny: It will follow the fate of its predecessors.

After watching the evolution of LT over the years I am doubtful that Los Pueblo de Pescadores will be rebuilt the way it was. In many ways it was one of the last vestiges of the old fishing village that LT once was. It saddens me to think just how much more different LT will be now that its gone. I'm just grateful that I got to visit and enjoy it just a few short months ago.

Las Terrenas Live !

From Las Terrenas-Live (click above link):
5 am - According to watchmen...the fire started in the Mosquito Bar while in the restaurant next door, the Cayuco, people begin to remove the gas tanks.

5:15 a.m. - Fire spreads on both sides of the bar, the Cayuco and La Terrasse. The first gas tank explodes, accelerating the fire. The front of the Gaia club starts burning and the inside of the establishment melts.

5:40 a.m. - Fire reaches Pizza Playa and half of the Fishermen village is on fire. ..two new gas tank explosions occur...

Monday afternoon, 11 am, a first meeting was held in the Yuca Caliente restaurant, in the presence of the 5 owners of the 15 establishments that were destroyed and their managers. Local authorities were represented by the Las Terrenas Mayor, Jose Alexis Martinez, Mariana Vanderhorst, vice mayor, Elsa de Leon and Gerard Prystasz.

The second meeting took place in the afternoon, at 3 pm at the Yuca Caliente too, this time with the presence of the Minister of Tourism Francisco Javier Garcia, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Environment, the Red Cross and the Tourist Police.
The only establishment that was not affected was the Steakhouse, thanks to Wellington, the watchman, who threw water on the front of it during the fire.

The Minister of Tourism, Francisco Javier Garcia announced.... we in the Tourism Ministry pledge to rebuild this village as quickly as possible, with the same characteristics.
M.Garcia also announced the donation of a fire truck to Las Terrenas.
The Fishermen Village was built on the public domain, since it was within 60 meters of beach, and its reconstruction only will be performed if a presidential decree is issued.

Time for the residents of the DR to step up to the plate. In the past few months DR1 has reported on multiple fires. All had one common factor, the lack of a prompt response by a fire department. Luckily, none resulted in loss of life. As the government seems not to care, it is up to the residents to address this problem. Much the way the fire services began in the U.S., to this day 71% of the fire services in the US are staffed by volunteer firefighters. Local community leaders and busines leaders should organize volunteer fire companies and raise funds to equip and train them. Even if they required a fee to have your building protected in case of fire, I'm sure most building owners would consider this cheap insurance. I have commented on many threads in the past that the DR is a firetrap waiting for a disaster to happen. I see that disaster coming sooner than later.

Just past by the "Pueblo de pescadores". Officials and architects from the government (Turism) and owners are working like crazy to establish the lines to rebuild everything!!!
