The story would be amusing if it didn't involve such a serious subject. Further proof that local people and businesses must assume the responsibility for their own fire protection.
Two engines with no source of water and 60 feet of hose don't even equal one.Wasn't that a " 4 Alarm" fire ??
Nothing beyond a 2 Alarm for LT.....:rambo:
Better than nothing and better than One..huh?
Excuse me, but is there not, an expat and a well-to-do Dominican condo and/or business owning community in LT, that just might be interested in making that community safe from, of all things, fire?! Why is having inadequate firefighting machinery sound outrageous and counter-intuitive to me? Oh well ...
They won't learn until it hits home, either family members dying or huge numbers loosing their homes or livelihoods. The worse case scenario for the government is none of those. It is a tourist family perishing in a fire, which results in international bad press concerning Dominican building codes and fire protection. The economic loss due a downturn in tourism in a case like that would dwarf the cost of outfitting an effective firefighting service. It is human nature to ask questions after the horse has bolted from the stable.
The 16 entrepreneurs of the 'pueblo de pescadores' probably never thought of the fire hazard really although knowing that the local 'bomberos' and their truck were a joke.
Had they bought and maintained a motor pump they'd probably have saved a good number of businesses. The sea there is near, a few yards only...
Lack of solidarity, too much money to contribute for the pump purchase, ...?
Will they learn?
