www.
I would say this is the place you want to go to, El Canario Patio Lounge. It is because they teach salsa there, too. Just walk down the Atarazanas, off the north side of the Alcazar de Colon. It is the last spot on that street. Check their website for when they have events.

To see good dancing in SAnto Domingo, visit Lucia 203, up Hostos street (the street where the Mercure is located), before Meson de Bari Restaurant.

just curious to know which dance schools you went to, if you don't mind saying.

i hope you dance to stuff like this

Eddie Palmieri Salsa Orchestra - YouTube

OMG! A Barry Rogers sighting. Featured along w/Jimmy Bosch, and in the great tradition of Palmieri's "La Perfecta" two-trombone band, the two are undoubtedly the greatest salsa slide trombone players of all time. Below see them a quarter of a century ago jamming w/the legendary Cachao.

Hello Everyone,

I will be going to DR in a few weeks and was looking for some salsa spots.

I've been taking Salsa classes for a few years now in NYC, I know Cuban Salsa (rueda de casino) style and NY Style salsa.
If you know some places where they play mostly salsa, I'm open to hear your suggestions. I also really enjoy dancing where there's a live band. Any suggestions, recommendations will be great!

Thanks! :)

I don't know what cuban salsa is. In DR they seem to use the step on 2. i naturally go on 1.

Think of cuban salsa mainly as a faster beat salsa.

Btw I dont beleive in 'theories' such as 1 or 2 etc, dont even know what they mean.

You learn to dance as learn to walk and talk, watch-listen-practice even in front of a mirrror by yourself,

if you are flex and like dancing no problem. [dominican girl are stiff when dancing salsa and do not follow the leader]

Best salsa dancer i have seen are from Europe, if you ask why?... "we take it seriously" will be the answer.

A few comments:
- Every time I was in this Canariobar they played salsa. But the dancearea is really small, maybe they use on special evenings the large courtyard. And the music was so loud I couldn't stay inside.
- The best dancers for cuban style come from Cuba (many of them teach now in Europa), for other styles from other countries.
- The dominicans not only dance mostly on 2 but (which ist very strange) the man starts with his left foot forwards, also in case he dances on 1.

You are wrong on so many accounts.

Firstly, there is no such thing as Cuban Salsa. The OP referred to it to describe Rueda de Casino, a group dance where dancers take turns improvising in the middle of a circle. Salsa is generally attributed to Cuban music rythyms not Cuban dance.

In the second case, if you express as an expert on salsa and dance ("we take it seriously"), then you must know the difference btwn 1 and 2. 1 and 2 refers to the emphasis placed in the 8 count salsa dance cycle. It makes all the difference. On 2 is the preferred method today for a reason. It evolved from On 1 as the dance gained popularity in NYC night clubs. Clubs would get so filled w/on 1 dancers that typically turned their partners and danced around in wide circles, that a lot of bumping into and stepping on other dancers in the jam packed dance floors resulted, and so caused many problems and many times brawls. The solution was dancing on 2, a more linear version that featured controlled turns within the linear axis.

Finally, there is no way that Europeans (the stiffest of all) are the best salsa dancers. Puleeease. Nor is your point on using mirrors as a learning technique an insight. All dance studios have wall-to-walls.

Empiric has all the latinos on this site *****d off, lol

Empiric the day the best salsa dancers will be from Europe will be the day Congolese are the best in Waltz. They can be good, even excellent ,but they will always be missing that je-ne-sais-quoi :)

Oui madame. But I bet it would be easier for Congolese dancers to pick up waltz, than for Europeans to perfect salsa.

jabejubentus,

first of all you said, "Firstly, there is no such thing as Cuban Salsa"

Generally speaking dance variations exist, Cubans have their own as well as Puerto Ricans and people from California, which I think more Mexican - south america.

It's called positive reinforcement. It doesn't confer salsa expertise on you. You're learning, but slow down and learn some more.
