Howdy, I'm from the US living in RD with my novia, I'm very pleased to have found a fountain of wisdom in this site. Thank you all.
Let's keep it positive okSome of the wisdom you might not like. If someday your Dominican novia tells you she's pregnant, 99% chances the baby is not yours.
What about wisdom then? How to avoid getting scammed in DR, how to avoid getting robbed in DR, how to avoid getting killed in DR, how to avoid going to prison in DR, how to prevent dying in a car accident in DR? Welcome to 'paradise'Let's keep it positive ok

Thank you, AE, same here. Our new member came here to say hi and introduce themselves, didn't ask for advice. Why so much gloom and doom? In many many decades in DR, NONE of those things have happened to me. It’s not inevitable. Like anywhere else, a little street smarts go a long way.
Share your experience how Banco Popular screws you exactly, please! There are so many people here saying that Banco Popular screws them too, but I use Banco Popular for 20 years and they never tried to screw me (by the way, I also receive wire transfers from other countries). So I am really curious what they do to you.I'm so tired of Banco Popular screwing me.
By the way, nice to see somebody on this forum who has a sense of humor, finally.Jajajaj, todos quedense tranquilo. ...Hope everyone has a good night!
I can't really give an opinion honestly, I don't actually have a bank account with them, or any bank here. (yet) For my first few months here everything was going great, with them being the only bank I could withdraw money from (eating lots of fees of course), but as of late not one of their atms near me has been working/has had money in it. I will be wire transfering from now on.Share your experience how Banco Popular screws you exactly, please! Well, if by screwing you meant high fees for withdrawing in ATMs from foreign cards, every bank in DR will do the same. Popular is good for receiving wire transfers, I have never had a problem with them. You open two accounts, one in USD and another one in pesos, you receive your wire transfers to your dollar account, you exchange from USD to pesos using internet banking or app, and pay everywhere in pesos using their debit/ATM card linked to your pesos account, and withdraw cash using the same card. I do the same 20 years here.I can't really give an opinion honestly, I don't actually have a bank account with them, or any bank here. Welcome to DR1. I found that Scotiabank ATMs dont charge my UK cards any fees (plus the banks offer Mastercard exchange rates) but those ATMs are not numerous on the North Coast. Try them when/if you can next time.I can't really give an opinion honestly, I don't actually have a bank account with them, or any bank here. Depending on the amount of USD you wish to send here, using one of the online services to send the money to yourself may be better than doing a wire transfer to a bank account. That will depend on the fee your US bank charges you for a wire transfer. For example, my bank charges $45 for a wire transfer, so if I only wish to send $1000 at a time, that is a pretty steep fee over time. As mentioned earlier, there are several threads about banks, methods of transferring money, etc...enjoy!I can't really give an opinion honestly, I don't actually have a bank account with them, or any bank here.
