With all these new malls are they going to close and get rid of the older run down eye sore shopping centers?

Some of the newer malls are dying a slow death.
I expect many will become dead malls.
Major World cities such as London thrive with few malls. Internet and catalog shopping are thriving and because some tyrants have closed street markets in some parts of the World free bus services to open markets have to be provided.

Surprisingly, the oldest mall in SD, (plaza naco) still gets business, and I don't think they're planning to close it any time soon.

I think they want to hear SAMBIL is being built by DomYork and Drug money.. LOL !

I don't know about the other malls, but I'm pretty sure Sambil is not a drug money laundering, since Sambil is a famous brand of malls in Venezuela. If I'm not mistaken they got about 6 different Sambil malls, in various Venezuelan cities, and now they decided to expand outside Venezuela.

BTW, I heard that once the this mall in SD is opened, Sambil has plans to built one here in Santiago. I hope Santiago doesn't get over saturated with malls like SD, I think is good enough wiith the three we already got.

It is a pity that the government has not prevented so many new malls being built in SD - many stand nearly empty on an average day. Why did they plan over-saturation? I guess all the rents being paid will inflate prices to the considerable disadvantage of the ordinary Dominican.

Sambil another potential dead mall - plenty dead malls in China also.

I guess gangs of Venez paid thugs will force normal shops to close ... like has happened in Venez ... Venez has a higher murder rate ...

DR crime rate is increasing.

Nearly dead malls in SD already - food prices set to rise by 10% - no customers for these landlords in the future!

This whole mall boom has gotten way outta control!....just how many malls does a small island country need? I mean for the love of God the D.R. doesn't even consist of the whole island! I am all for progress and modernization but WTF?

I'm reminded of a line from the Joni Mitchell song "Big Yellow Taxi" when I see all these posts about malls.

More than one line......

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got til its gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They took all the trees
And put 'em in a tree museum
And they charged the people
A dollar and a half to seem 'em

Don't it always seem to go,
That you don't know what you've got

It's the way the development of cities of the times demand. More concentration and less commute to carry out the same taks of a person or family.

You can carry out much of the needs in a mall of this kind in the DR than even the US for that matter. You can even do the family's grocery shopping while buying school supplies, or that last minute vitamin for your toddler...

It's a matter of density, vertical growth and land value. The more you can pack into the less space, the more profits VS expenses it will be for your bottom line. For the consumers it means having to travel less, have more under a few steps and time savings.

They are a dime a dozen and not only that! But they have the largest Mall complex of the Caribbean and second largest in LA as well!

With a population of about 1/3 of that in the DR!

It just seems a little nuts to me that all these malls are concentrated in a couple of areas...why not a new mall in bavaro, higuey, punta cana, or la romana....i dunno? just spitballin'

I'm no economist or a politician but my friend's ex-wife was a teacher in puerto rico and she was always going on about how puerto rico's government was always one stepaway from bankruptcy and that nobody with a government job gets paid on time, and whole crap load of complaints that i cant remember. Why can't these governments D.R. included find away for private investors to contribute to the government and the betterment of its people in a way that would be beneficial for everyone; instead of just another mall. there has to be precedent or a successful model for it. I know that its wishful thinking.

Demand, population concentration/growth, purchase power, spendable income, etc...

New Mall in Bavaro, Higuey, Punta Cana or La Romana? Are you kidding or you honestly don't know yet?
