Contrary to the belief of some, Santo Domingo has quite a reputation for bicycle riding.

On the drive to the capital from JD in the mornings there are always 2-3 groups of bikers, looking VERY professional
riding hard in the "bike lane". They move in tandem at a fast clip and I have always wondered about their safety. It CAN'T be safe in any lane the way people drive here in the DR.

I see the same thing when I'm on the guagua. Not a chance I would do that. I don't mind riding on motos but I would never take a bike on the autopista.

I used to see them in Santo Domingo and wondered the same. Also early evening when it was getting dark on Av Sarasota for instance.

There have been multiple reports of motorcycles in accidents with themselves, cars, buses, etc. Not one that I can think of regarding a similar bicycle accident.

There are groups of bicyclists seen in other parts of the country too, even on the edge of major highways.

I see bicycle riding groups all the time on Av España. They usually always have a vehicle in the front and rear of the group. Some even have a motor or 2 riding along side. I still would be afraid to ride on the main roads here.

Those are organized rides. Usually the vehicle in the back is called a "sag wagon". Hurt, or tired ,gives you a chance to stop peddling.

The bicycle store in Bavaro near the San Juan Mall used to organize runs. Have not been in there for a few years so I don't know if they still do. But this place is very professional and the owner is a rider so I would trust their trips......................

We have friends that participate in a cycling club. The ride all over the country in groups. Sometimes they will do a "charity ride", getting sponsors and then donating the money to local schools and other organizations.

I've seen that too, but not on Av España. I've seen it on the Autopista de Las Americas and some side streets. I think one or 2 times I've seen it they are being used as a pacer.

We have friends who are serious cyclists on the south coast. I am a 'get to work or shopping type of' cyclist but would never consider riding there.

There is a group that does cycling on the Duarte Highway between La Vega and Santiago. No vehicles accompanying them.

One time I was coming out of the church on top of the Santo Cerro and was almost run over by one of the cyclists. The shock was seeing cyclists up there instead of staying on the Duarte Highway, so they include detours from the highway and going up a hill is no obstacle for them. Maybe the Virgin of Mercy helps them get up there. lol

And I'll confirm they ride on the November 6th highway in large numbers.

Isn't the purpose of a public forum to share opinions. Please enlighten me on what you think the purpose of this or any other forum is.
Thanks in advance.
