Senator Omar Fernandez (Fuerza del Pueblo – National District) expressed concern on the increasing number of Haitian women giving birth in the Dominican Republic. Speaking during a recent Senate session, he said recent statistics reveal that in 63 public hospitals nationwide more Haitian women give birth than Dominican women.
He said public hospitals reported 4,027 births to Haitian women, equivalent to births in June and July together in October 2024, coinciding with a peak in deportations.
He said that according to data published by the National Health Service (SNS), births by Haitians increased from being 24% of the total in 2019 to 36% so far this 2024.
