The government decided to keep the severance pay scheme that employers have grown to know and love at the expense of their businesses.
There was talk it would go away, but no...

I guess giving the employee that barely makes a livable salary a fair shake if he is canned is not agreeable to some here................
It is not, but if you would have any employees here you would know why the common Situation is very bad.
After they work for you for several years, they want their liquidation more than the Devil needs fresh Souls, they want to get fired. They will do such a lousy job and will do so much damage that you will fire them in the end. I been through this so many times. I'm sick of it. For every easy task that i need employees for, i do it the "Chinese way" > HIRE AND FIRE before they reach 3 month (only after 3 month there are entitled to Compensation"
The present Situation keeps thousand of companies from increasing salary's and/or hire new people.

If you had the severance money that I paid here you can retire to the south of France. And I have no problem with it............

If you're fired for cause there's no liquidation and I heard the maximum liquidation regardless of how long the employee was there is only 6 months of pay. That's not a lot of money for most workers(?)

To SKY: Lets make something clear : People that quit by them self do not get this kind of Severance Payment.
Now you tell me that you have no problem to pay a ridiculous amount of money to a lousy worker, "lousy" obviously because if otherwise you would not have to fire him/her right !? Well good for you my friend that you have no problem with this !!! I DON"T BELIEVE A SINGLE WORD OF WHAT YOU SAY !!!
There is no Normal Person non Earth that likes this.

Wrong info ! if he/she works for you 20 years, it's 20 salary's. (and it's always the last salary that is used to multiply)

I learned decades ago that if you want to get rid of any employee for any reason, your best option is to pay them off.
Yes !!! Never ever let it go to Court. YOU NEVER WIN !!! Friend of mine lost against a secretary that through a cup of hot coffee in his face on video;
"After so many years and in regards to her Family Situation (single Mother) you can give her a written warning " these were the words from the judge I'm not kidding. There is an old saying in the DR: If a Employee sues you, don't drive to Court so you want also loose the Cash for the gasoline.

We used it to our advantage. It was SOP to tell employees if they ever wanted to leave, give us two weeks notice and they'd receive full pay.

There were more than a few who gave 2 weeks notice then changed their minds before the two weeks were up.

And if anyone wanted to quit on the spot, we'd tell them no problem and come back in 10 days and pick up their check. Pretty painless.

not true, We paid out several million pesos downsizing our workforce during the pandemic. Everything is done through the Labour ministry.
