Another small step for DR exports and another big step for the advancement of Chinese hegemony. The trade balance will favour China as they flood the DR market with more of their cheaply made and not necessarily safe products. More junk for DR garbage landfills.

International Chinese trade is on a downturn and the value of their currency is reflecting their economic misfortunes. Small deals like this one will help bolster flagging Chinese exports but the effect on Chinese economy won’t be noticeable.

Will this new agreement benefit DR tourism? I doubt it. I haven’t seen large numbers of Chinese tourists at DR resorts in the past and I don’t expect to see them because of this new agreement. They Chinese are different. Not like the alcohol and food binging, beach loving, North American, European, and UK all inclusive resort tourists.

Will the agreement open doors for more Chinese businesses? Probably, but is that a good thing given the Chinese tax evasion practices and poor treatment of their DR staff? The DR government has been turning a blind eye to both these problems and local DR business owners who comply with the tax laws and treat their staff fairly suffer the disadvantages. Buying locally usually makes for a better economic environment and the money gets invested back into the local communities instead of heading offshore.

The previous DR administrations opened the trade door to the Chinese government years ago. The current administration can’t close that door. Just another bad legacy Luis is stuck with and hopefully, turn into an advantage for his country. The president’s plate is overflowing, internal police, military, and government corruption, rapid growth in illegal drug activity, the increasing Haitian border problems, and the growing Chinese influence on the DR economy. I hope he has a strong constitution and stays healthy. He will need it if/when he is re-elected. He’s become an icon for a better DR future.

Bananas will spoil by the time they get to China.
Cheap plastic can sit a long time crossing the ocean with no issue.

Yes... Yes... Yes... And yes.

And the answer isn't with the government... The answer is with the citizenry... The DR ciudadanía.

If Abinader understands this, then he will need to convince his fellow political appointees that developing an informed and educated citizenry is the way forward. But this may be seen as detrimental to their own personal ambitions, and the ambitions of the private sector whose support they depend on.

Additionally... Does the citizenry even care?

And the world keeps turning.

Cheap plastic can sit a long time crossing the ocean with no issue.

Bananas are produced in massive quantities in Asia — including China... India #1, China #2, Indonoesia #3... All way closer to China than the DR.

And the plastic that can endure the crossing, after being used and discarded, can then wash up on the beaches of the DR.
