Its a NON Issue for me ..I now play their game , my way , I BUY the return ticket just a day or less before I go to the Airport , but NOT with my Original one way which is 2 + weeks before the trip . If you buy the return leg as part of a round trip, that is when they GOT you locked in to their Scam which is $150 to change the date if you decide to extend your vacation or have to go back earlier because of some Business Matter .

I cancel the return leg when I land .
I am kind of warming up to the idea posted earlier about RENTING the return leg reservation , and paying only like $10 - $20 for that service ,
although I do still think this can go bad if they start cracking down
In the end, are you really saving any money buying two one-way tickets vs a round-trip and paying the change fee?

Seriously .
what part of Open Ended Vacation do you guys not understand ? or are you just not reading posts .

its getting really frustrating explaining this .
What he does is really simple and what most do when they need a return ticket. He buys TWO one way tickets going and coming back. Then he cancels the return when he arrives and gets a FULL refund. Then he is free to buy a one way ticket whenever he wishes to return at no charge for a penalty of any kind. Simple................

I totally understand an open ended vacation. My question still is - In the end, are you really saving any money buying two one-way tickets vs a round-trip and paying the change fee? I thought two one-way tickets cost more than a round-trip(?).

I've done this a time or five in the past. Usually cheaper than trying to reschedule (prior to pandemic) a return flight home.
No idea which is cheaper now.

This is where you are dead wrong. Two one way tickets from or to the DR are CHEAPER than a RT ticket This is because of the way the DR tax structure is. Next time you want to book check the price of a RT ticket vs Two one way tickets and you will see what I mean.......................

How can I be dead wrong when I never thought I was dead right? That's why I asked the question!!!(see post #121). Sheesh!

This is a little mentioned benefit of having residency. You don't have to worry about this nonsense!!!

I have flown on American Airlines on a one way ticket to the DR probably a hundred times, they have NEVER asked for a return ticket, never. Jetblue and Spirit always have asked me. Today at check-in I was asked and required to purchase a return ticket,I'm not complaining,I understand why they do it. But times are a changin'....

AA has merged with JB as you probably know. Must be one corporate operating plan being put in place.

And maybe one of the few benefits of having residency. I didn’t renew mine last year July. Now booked to travel to the DR one month in 2023 with a return.

They did?

I suppose an alliance could be the reason American starting checking for on going flights instead of ignoring that requirement by the DR government.
JetBlue and Spirit appear to follow that regulation.

Yep. A mere miss use of the word "merger" instead of "partnership" since they are trying to walk aound an anti-trust event from happening.

OK...AA and JB have a partnership arrangement that says.........................That's better.

Is is an alliance. That is NOT the same as a merger. But they both now seem to be checking for return/outgoing flights for non-residents which both should have been doing for many years now.

I recently flew back to Santo Domingo from Ecuador with Copa, with my UK passport. At the check in desk they wanted to see my ongoing flight from the DR, which I didn't have as I live here. Only showing them my DR residency card resolved the situation, which makes sense, but I was surprised that they were so diligent.

What airline? Canadian's not obeying the Dominican regulations? Hmmm.
The airline is supposed to ask.

I have been asked to show a return ticket in both Edmonton and Toronto. When we show our residency cards we get that deer in the headlights look.
It might be interesting this year as our cards just expired so if they ask we have to get them to believe the new ones being processed.
