Meanwhile they are supporting your local economy by eating in reastaurants and drinking in bars, so look the other way and STFU!

It's really not that big of a deal, how does it reflect on you?

It sort of does reflect on me and all other gringos in the way that we are looked at here. And i am not trying to be cruel, i was just simply trying to maybe educate many guys who just dont know any better. We as americans need to take a little more pride in our appearance in public then we do. Lets be serious, even most of the poorest dominicans always dress nice in public. But back in the states women dont mind going out in public looking like a joke with their hair in rollers and stained drooping rippes sweatpants.Dominicans may be poor but they do take pride in their appearance.

If David Hasselhoff is happy with his rented wife and wife beater T shirt, then I doubt he cares how he is perceived by some wanna-be Latino.

Start worrying about how you are perceived, not the guy at the next table, did you eavesdrop on his conversation to see if his date ordered shrimp?

I am sorry, but one poorly dressed Gringo does not make all Gringos look bad.

Perhaps you can solve this problem and hand out a dress code booklet on every JFK-STI flight?

This is not a joke when i am giving a plea do all you gringos in santiago to stop strutting around town with your shorts, flip flops and muscle tank tops. YOU GUYS stick out like a sore thumb. Please look around and notice that here in the DR your baywatch attire is for the beach only.

Just last week i am eating at a nice place near the monument and in walks joe gringo in his shorts and sandles wearing a black tank top and a baseball hat. He thought he looked so good and made sure and talked loud when he entered to let everyone know he was in the house.

I know people are going to say its his choice what to wear and what do i care. Well i care because its guys like that and all the other beach bum dressing david hasselhoff wanabes giving the rest of americans a bad image.ok wear your shorts in the streets during the day if you really need to. your on vacation and you need to relax. But can you please just put on a pair of jeans and even a t-shirt when you go out to eat or to a bar at night.

If you want to wear shorts your whole vacation take some advice and stay at a AI or at a tourist town like sosua where you and your flip flops will fit in just fine.

Are you familiar with the phrase..."People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones".??

You worry what everyone would think about you bringing a "local girl" home from the DR or your multiple rendezvous.... but you can stand in judgement of the attire of other diners at a restaurant??:ermm::tired:

Sorry tamborista but i am far from a wanna- be latino. Iam just a guy who dont want most americans in santiago wanna- be- looking stupid.

And you usually have some interesting post, but to judge me with your wanna be statement when you know nothing about me shows me your true character. And this is not just a dress code for the DR. the no shorts and flip flops should apply at any nice restaurant regardless of location.

I Totally agree with your comments considering that your opinions on appropriate dress are probably based on the nice retaurants you frequent like Mcdonalds AND KFC.

well, let me get the record straight:
I do care how expats behave in santiago. I am an expat and I am trying to set an example for the other percentage of foreigners who don't come here to hunt hookers, walk around in flip flops/shorts, hang out in carwashes, walk hand in hand with a ugly hooker who has just walked off the UFO flying ship. I am sick and tired of people telling me"wow, how rare that you don't have a hooker girlfriend", how rare you didn't come here to live on the beach" how rare you don't act like the ones in sosua", how nice to see you have taken time out to learn about our culture etc etc etc. The image majority of the stray dog type tourists and resident expats have created for us, that it would take a thousand years for the dominicans to forgive us.
Its becoming more and more common sight to see expats venturing into santiago and are seen with the ugliest looking barrio (ghetto) rat you could find anywhere. Where do you guys find these girls? what hole or a cave you guys have to walk in to find these star wars creatures?
Now I see tourist / expats roaming santiago streets, dressed like fools and trying to attract attention by doing the funny crazy chicken dance in the discos. Guys, your chicken dance makes you look like an idiot. The people are laughing at you.
So if you must feel comfortable by looking like you just came out of a swimming pool or rolled off the bed, then please try to stay in sosua and cabarete. You only look like idiots in santiago.

"But back in the states women dont mind going out in public looking like a joke with their hair in rollers and stained drooping rippes sweatpants.Dominicans may be poor but they do take pride in their appearance."

Actually, I have seen more woman here with rollers in their hair on the streets, stores than in the US.

So the suit wearing, Porsche driving latino has style? How about when this mofo throws the trash out of the windows?
Are you talking about self-respect?? Just drive around anywhere and see the garbage and waste laying around.
I have not seen any short and flip-flop wearing gringo throwing crap all over in your country, but as I said before, I have seen many locals do.
This is (or could be) a wonderful country, and you dominicans makes a f@^*!g waste land out of it.
So do you still want to talk about style?? How about the driving style of locals?
Do you really want me to go on?

"And i am not trying to be cruel, i was just simply trying to maybe educate many guys who just dont know any better."

Yes, you should educate, but don't start with the dress code. And maybe you should leave the gringos for the last.
I don't care how you dress. You can wear a $ 5000 suit, I won't respect you better.
I'd respect you when you do your job right, deliver your promises and have respect for my time, show growth and advance in your life but the majority of the locals unable to do that.
Believe me, I have traveled around and don't remember to see bigger show-off people than dominicans!

I'm fed with locals asking me if I can bring them cell phones, fake Rolex or other fake watches from the US! Like time would matter for them...or do dominicans feel better when they see how late are they already on their fake watches?
And yes, there are exceptions - I have met some- but are you one of them?

Hey, Cobra, so you're the guy who stole my pants.

I was looking for those. I needed them for a very special date in Santiago.

You know, nothing but the most up-to-the-minute fashionable statement when I'm in town.

dress code policy

The normative point in this debate is the perception by association. As long as it is not against the law, each individual has a right to dress like she or he wants; decency laws prohibits thereby direct nudity in most places, and sanitary regulations also dictates that people wear shoes in some countries.

Decency and respect for local customs also have self-regulating effects on many travellers, especially if they want to be accepted by the local population and want to enter into some sort of respectful conversation and learning about the place that they visit. Although, as is experienced in many tourist hubs, not all have the same level of sensitivity to local norms and customs - or don't care.

Where I come from, people dress at time in the most bizarre fashion, some more colourful and interesting(!) than others - and we probably have our different opinions about piercing, both aesthetics and comfort - point is that people leave the impression and will be treated accordingly.

One way that restaurants divide people is by instating a dress code, especially in areas away from the beachfront - maybe you could advocate for this in Santiago.

No i am sorry but i am american and not Dominican. And very true about the dominicans with the garbage thrown all over the place, i just cant understand that. But this was just about americans in flip flops and shorts in the DR., not about the flaws of the dominican people.

Thanks for the advise but i will leave the advocate job for you to take. for all the people ranting at me about the short issue, i bet there are just as many guys thinking to themselves, wow i didnt know that its not kosher to wear shorts to a nice restaurant in santiago. If they know and still choose to then good for them it is their choice. BUT YOU KNOW THAT MANY GUYS WILL NOW tHINK TWICE ON THEIR NEXT VISIT.

If i have saved one nice gringo the pain and embarasement of looking foolish in the DR. then all the negative feedback was well worth it. But he still needs to get rid of that bario rat chica that he shows off all over town.

I think that the only people who have a problem with my opinions on this subject are you part time twice a year wish you could live in the DR short wearing guys. I bet most of the americans that live in santiago or spend a great deal of time here agree with me. Again its your party and look stupid if you want to.And about ypor bario rat, you can keep her but stick to the cabanas and dont flaunt her around town like you hit the chica lottery.
