Reviving this almost forgotten thread that I had so skillfully hijacked several months ago reminds me to suggest that people going to the DR should take along some of their favorite toilet paper, especially if they are picky about it.

In fact, fill any excess suitcase space with it. Any surplus toilet paper could certainly be given as gifts to locals. It's a good idea to have a roll anyway for emergencies. Even the best hotel room (or house) might occasionally not have any.

As indicated here, toilet paper is expensive, and premium brands might be hard to find. In fact, the only premium brands I have seen, even in the biggest supermarkets, are Charmin and Kleenex (Cottonelle?). Dominicans especially appreciate Quilted Northern. Its fibrous quality seems to withstand the humidity better than the other soft brands. Since they don't flush it anyway, possibly clogging the toilet is not an issue.

Concerning Dominicans' attitudes/habits about toilet paper, once when I stopped in to a relatively upscale Dominican house (2 bathrooms with bidets in each), I had a sudden urge to use the toilet. There was no paper. I called out to the hostess. She then spent the next five minutes, with her whole family, looking for it. It was finally located in a locked cabinet on the front porch. What would have happened if I had not stopped by?

Remember where you're at.

I just got back from the supermarket and did my weekly food shopping and I did bought some of the same items. Let's see how they compare!!

1- Bought 3 green peppers for 1.89
2- Did not buy soup but they are not even close to that. Much pricier in DR
3- Butter- 1.49
4- Tropicana 64 oz. juice, on sale 3 for 6.00
5- Foulgers coffee, on sale for 1.59
6- No brocoli for me. Do not know the price
7- 5 Del Monte cans of corn, on sale for 2.00
8- Gum- (10 in a pack, 50 sticks in) for 1.59
9- Ham- Deli ham 2.50 pound
10- Deodorant, did not buy but that price is ridiculous!.

Man, I really need to sit and think real hard if I really want to go live in the DR!

Tomorrow I'm going to take a walk around the supermarket and price up some of the more common imported items so people will get an idea of how expensive it can be to shop in the DR.

What are you buying, Robert, imported toilet paper? We buy a Dominican brand, Marcal, or something like that, single ply, 1000 sheet package of 4 (double normal roll), very good quality, for less than that.
I just changed to Dominican Toilet Paper. 18.75 pesos for a 4 pack that are pretty small but you have to understand that they are so ruff it feels better than sex sometimes so look at all the money I save on sex now that I can no longer afford soft toilet paper!

Prices are really getting out of hand and I have no clue how Dominicans can do it.

How about this then?

Just back from Sosua - popped into Playero for a few items:

1 x "French" loaf = 37.50
1 x Pepin sliced loaf = 56.25
1 x Pasta sauce = 128.85

The whole lot (hardly luxury items) comes to 222.60 or, if you happen to be American $8 USD - That's right! $8 dollars!

If the people who choose to stay for winter (Canadians and so forth) aren't aware of this then they're gonna be having a pretty miserable time! I bet they'd sooner be at home freezing their bits off.

Absolutely

And until the peso stabilizes at one point (any point, really) Prices will continue to be absurdly high as the wholesalers and retailers hedge their bets as to cost of replacement..

Most sales that I can get "insider knowledge of" are based on a 50 to 0ne exchange rate.

One example are cigar boxes that at RD$45 to one were a reasonable price, a bit steep, of $3.11. The same box at 28.5 to one is now $4.91 and out of the market.

Supermarkets??

I saw Jan's post up above and saw where she got cheese at RD$49 a pound. That same cheese is way over 120 RD$ a pound today..

I just sent some "cash" to the DR and the exchange rate that I got paid was RD $ 27.75 (no I am not kidding). Now I am sending about 3 times as much, a week, as I used to a few months ago. Now I know. I mean, I knew that things are expensive there but this is ridiculous!.

Imagine those poor lads that have to send money for medicine also.

Load of bread, here in Reading, 79 cents (not the real big one)
Sliced bread, 99 cents.
Scott Tissue, for the butt, 65 cents

I asked my brother, who goes to the DR once a month 3 questions a few months ago:

1- Why don't you clean your glasses with dominican toilet paper?
-because it would be the same as cleaning it with SAND PAPER!
2- Why does your wife brings Charming toilet paper from the US?
-have you seen my *** hole?. If you did, you will know why!
3- Some like it and some don't. Why don't you get use to it?
- because I am not a masochist(?) and I really do not like beach sand up my A**, actually, beach sand feels better!.

don't be so sure

/QUOTE]

don't be so sure Simon. it snowed today and going down to -6C tonight. i'll take some pricey tomato sauce any day!!!!

the big, missing point that no one seems to make is this:

THE NORTH AMERICAN PRICES ARE AFTER TAXES!!!!

we pay, on average in Canada, about .72 out of every dollar in taxes. while this covers every type of tax and fee, the majority of it is income tax. let's talk food prices once my government has taken over 50% off the top in income tax...and then added (only to some food items and everything else) a 15% VAT tax.

these comparisons are done out of context and exaggerate prices...oh, and did i mention the great investment income here in Canada at a whopping 2%?

i think i can handle expensive toilet paper if i am making 12% on investments with no income tax......

this thread is for whiners. how about some strategies to reduce costs? buy in bulk? buy at markets? cook from scratch? get a breadmaker? raise a few chickens? plant a fruit tree?
