Some pools Santo Domingo
Barcelo Santo Domingo Hotel (formerly Hotel Lina), day pass to use the pool and gym, can be purchased for $15US. Also a day pass that includes food can be purchased for a little more. Gym and pool bar (with food) adjacent to the pool. Jacuzzi and outdoor lounge also located adjacent to the pool. Located at Avenida Maximo Gomez and Avenida 27 de Febrero. Metro stops close, as well as the National Theater and Plaza de Cultura (which has several museums, bars and restaurants). Friendly Haitian guys run the cigar store in the lobby, Cuban and Dominican cigars and Cuban and Dominican Rum. A nice cigar lounge located next to the good Asian Restaurant in the lobby. Live music and Karaoke some nights in the lobby bar of the Hotel Santo Domingo.
Crowne Plaza Hotel, Gazcue, Santo Domingo, recently remodeled pool deck, has a pool bar, outdoor showers, salon (with massage) and gym. Daily or weekly passes can be purchased to use the pool and/or gym.
This is about the only pool open now in Gazcue now that the Sheraton (Melia) which had the best pool is no longer accepting outside members (sob sob) and the Jaragua is closed. It is ok. small. not great for laps as it has the bouy cord in the middle and is really quite small and shallow. But it is clean and above traffic with a good view.
There is also a little pool at the next hotel.. what is it? The Centenario? or something like that on the next corner but it really did not seem as clean and had no changing rooms.
The Jaragua is closed til April but will probably be the best in the neighborhood when it opens again.
That is unless there is some sort of transporte publico now on George Washington?
Napolitano Hotel on the Malecon has a pool (it was renovated in the last ten years). Napolitano sells day passes for the pool and day passes for the pool with food included. I haven't yet visited the Napolitano pool.
Pool was wonderful at the Jaragua, nice greenery around that pool and the separate lagoon with ducks and turtles there.
30 million dollar renovation started at the Jaragua. JW Marriott at the Blue Mall looks very nice.
The pool at the body shop naco is excellent for doing laps. I love the pool at the Hotel Embajador, big and deep. Barcelo Santo Domingo Hotel pool is good.

Paraiso -- membership and classes
Club Paraiso (a membership club) off Av. Winston Churchill offers swimming lessons at its pool (think is around RD$3,000) a month. You pay the fee and work with a trainer or just swim in a lane. Sometimes you can have a lane for yourself, depending on the time.

When I used the Body Shop Naco pool in the afternoon during the week it wasn't crowded.

I brought with me a lycra swim cap and a make your combination lock for the lockers. Hotel pools don't require a swim cap, gym pools usually do.

There used to be a double diving board at the end deep end of the pool, I remember my husband diving off the top one all the time. I think they removed them in the late 80s.
